There are probably numerous facets of the significance of this number, including those offered above. Properly speaking, this number is not associated with Satan, but with the Beast of Revelation 13:18.
One explanation I think is interesting is Scott Hahn’s explanation that since the lower forms of creation (including humans) was finished on the sixth day, the number six is associated with beasts (Gen 1:26-31). It is only by man subjecting himself to worship God on the Sabbath, the seventh day, that he rises above the level of the beasts and is closer to God.

In the book “Why Do Catholics Do That?” by Kevin Orlin Johnson there is a whole chapter on the symbolism of numbers in the Bible. The number 666 can be proven to be Nero by a mistake in translating the Greek the St. John spoke into the Hebrew that he wrote and then to Latin; I know I am probably not making any sense - you might want to get the book (p. 258). Anyway, Hebrew letters of Nero’s name were nrwn qsr, numerically that is 666. Translations in Latin gave the beast the number 616 because Nero’s name in the Latin form of hebrew letters is nrw qsr. “The early Christian Latinists knew the reference was to Nero, and they translated the numbers accordingly.”
