Not necessarily. This would be to assume that it is the TLM that attracts people to the chapel. I noted on FE that some would ask for a location of SSPX chapel during travel, not the TLM.

My diocese also offers the extraordinary form at Annunciation and the FSSP will be starting a new parish dedicated solely to this form. None of this will have any effect on me directly, other than renew my support of the Cardinal who maintains a dedication to following the directives of the Holy Father. He has done a great job since he came here.
And on Fridays at the campus of St. Thomas! 🙂

We are fortunate to have had Latin Mass at several parishes in our diocese for years before the Motu. Our bishop (recently retired) has always supported the Latin Mass and encouraged it in the parishes. When there is sufficient demand, it happens. There is not a great deal of demand, but those who want it can find it.

As far as I know, we have no SSPX or sedevacantists. Our bishop drove them out whenever they attempted to gain a toehold. My husband and I became Catholic at about the same time he was in the process of driving out a sedevacantist group, and this process was actually covered with fairness by the secular news–pretty interesting! I felt like our bishop was a true shepherd, protecting us, his sheep, from the wolves.

same as with Cat, EF could be found before Motu,
One question how did bishop drive out sedevacantist. We have SSPX along with several sede groups in my town.

Unfortunately no experience. I was hoping there would be a few parish in the diocese that would provide the EF. My thought is reguarless of demand a few EF masses should be provided throughout the diocese. If you give it, it will be attended.

I think ?? that somehow he made sure that the people that they were asking to rent buildings from would say “no” to them. He also denounced them in public, and spread the warning throughout the parishes about the groups that are not in good standing with Rome.

Well, here in the diocese of saginaw, MI, there are NO approved EF Masses. I have to travel to a neighboring diocese to attend one. Though, that is only 1/2 hr away. Therefore, most Sundays for me, I am in the neighboring diocese.

Though this is not terribly inconvenient, it is unfortunate that I can’t attend one within the diocese in which I live.

And, to my knowledge, all of the other dioceses in this State have at least one EF Mass offered. It’s too bad there are none in this diocese. I’m sure there has got to be some others interested in the EF in Saginaw. I just don’t know any. Try to bring it up, and some people almost get offended at the EF!

T

Note: I do see some demand for Catholic traditions such as chant. I also see a lot of hostility to any amount of Latin. But so far not much demand for the EF Mass, and I’ll specify in my largely rural diocese.
I don’t know if it’s related but since we started adding chant our Mass attendance has gone down. We even had the children’s choir using chant and we started getting complaints from families that they would like more upbeat music for the children. We do have some hostility to the little bit of Latin we use, mostly from young families and people over 60. The won’t say or chant the prayers we do in Latin but just stand there.

I’m still amazed how often I meet Catholics who aren’t even aware the Latin Mass is available.

We have about 15 parishes that offer it weekly and on Holy Days. Where and when moves around a bit as priests are reassigned, but there is definately a demand for it and obviously very stable groups supporting the Mass. Since we also have very beautiful and reverant OF Masses, we are assured of an orthodox Mass no matter where we attend.

God bless my bishop! 😃

I am in the same diocese as you. I wish there was a TLM approved in the diocese, we will have to pray and talk about it with others to stir up interest. The closest one to me is about a 1/2 hour drive for me but with my current work schedule working til 4pm on Sundays, I cannot be there on time for it so I must go to a Saturday Ordinary Form Mass. I know there is a church in Sterling Heights called St Cyril and Methodius that offers the TLM on Saturday evenings that meets Sunday obligation but its at 6pm (and a nearly 2 hr drive for me). I do know that Immaculate Conception in Lapeer has the TLM on Thursday mornings at 8:45am, and I do go to that sometimes even though I have to drive about an hour or so to it on my day off work.

From Rorate Caeli:

07.07.07 - Tell us: 5 years of Summorum Pontificum

Tell us if and how the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, of Pope Benedict XVI, has been applied in your diocese and changed your Catholic life.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w_D0sxLO0...awAH8OLf8Y/s1600/sigi-benedict-xvi-rorate.JPG
A couple of things are evident in Summorum Pontificum:

1)The Church has renewed the form of the Mass over the centuries:

““Outstanding among them is Saint Pius V who, sustained by great pastoral zeal and following the exhortations of the Council of Trent, **renewed the entire liturgy **of the Church””
““One of the liturgical books of the Roman rite is the Roman Missal, **which developed **in the city of Rome and, with the passing of the centuries, little by little took forms very similar to that it has had in recent times.""
“”'It was towards this same goal that succeeding Roman Pontiffs directed their energies during the subsequent centuries in order to ensure that the rites and liturgical books were
brought up to date and when necessary clarified. From the beginning of this century they undertook a more general reform.
””
““In more recent times, the Second Vatican Council expressed a desire that the respectful reverence due to divine worship should be renewed and adapted to the needs of our time””
  1. Pope Benedict expresses and requests great care for the needs of Catholics who are inculturated in the Mass form they are attached to:
““no small numbers of faithful adhered and continue to adhere with great love and affection to the earlier liturgical forms””
““These had so deeply marked their **culture and their spirit **that in 1984 the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II, moved by a concern for the pastoral care of these faithful, with the special indult “Quattuor abhinc annos””

3)The Curch invokes it’s authority over the forms of the Mass through trust in the power of the Holy Spirit (possibly a similar relationship to the Church and Scripture??) :

““having reflected deeply upon all aspects of the question, **invoked the Holy Spirit and trusting **in the help of God, with this Apostolic Letter We DECREE the following:
…**The Roman Missal promulgated by Paul VI is the ordinary expression **of the Lex orandi…the Roman Missal promulgated by St. Pius V and reissued by Bl. John XXIII is to be considered as an extraordinary expression of that same Lex orandi, and must be given due honour for its venerable and ancient usage. These two expressions of the Church’s Lex orandi will in no any way lead to a division in the Church’s Lex credendi [Law of belief]. They are, in fact two uses of the one Roman rite.””
  1. The Church emphasizes no one particular form in a rigid fashion, rather it trusts the Holy Spirit to guide the Church. The Church recognizes that the form of the Mass needs to be renewed and developed in ways that maybe only God knows best. I try to give my trust and assent to it.
Application of Summorum Pontificum in our diocese? I have never heard it discussed once. The diocese implements the Mass changes as they come down and the parish follows. There is a Latin Mass (don’t think it’s extraordinary form tho) about 60 miles from us. I’m happy it’s offered for those who want it, and I would like to attend sometime, but It is not important enough for me to attend a specifically latin Mass to drive 3 extra hours. Plus I have commitments to my parish. I would never leave my parish unless required by job change etc…If the Mass at my parish were said in Latin tomorrow I’m learning the Mass parts.**

Do you know anyone else that may be interested in Saginaw? I do not. I’ve gotta believe there are more of us out there in this diocese.

And, the Mass you mentioned at 4pm… That’s the one I go too… Most Sundays.

I have been to St Cyrils once… Not for the Tridentine Mass. But, every Wednesday at 9am, they have the Novus Ordo in Latin. I went there for that. That is also 2 hrs away for me too, so its not an all the time thing for me to go there.

My experience?

Attended Norvos Ordo Mass for all my obligations.

Now I attend the Extraordinary Form for all my obligations except for one Sunday (work schedule rotation) per month.

I am not looking back. Asperges Me is one of my favorite parts. 👍

Here in South Carolina, minimal. We have three parishes which offer the Tridentine rite. One every third week, one every Sunday and one 7 days a week. There are no SSPX chapels, one sede parish. When asking about the possibility of having the number expanded you get a very frosty glare. Granted we have the third smallest number of Catholics in the US, but S.P. may as well not have happened. Very sad.

In the Archdiocese of Seattle we have a thriving TLM parish (FSSP) North American Marty’s. FSSP just opened a satellite parish in Tacoma. There is a twice monthly TLM in Bremerton and a twice monthly TLM in Port Angelus. A monthly TLM near Toledo, WA. There may be others but I’m not aware of them.

And yet, there is still a quiet opposition to anyone even requesting additional TLMs. Many OF parishoners are fiercely resistant and file complaints everytime they suspect that an EF’r misplaces something (i.e. the priests’s chair not replaced correctly or a music stand out of place.

We have found resistance within the clergy too. Its one thing to not know how to celebrate the EF but to refuse to even allow one in the parish just boggles my mind.

Part of the Cross we must carry.

In my Country we have:

One IPB Chapel, tree SSPX chapels, two Diocesan Gregorian Masses in two different cities (one per city). A FSSP Mission with presence in two little towns. And soon, a TLM in a town with a very popular and traditional Sanctuary.

In my city, we have a Bishop somewhat hostile to SP. This is a Diocese with lots of liberal elements.

Over here, we too have problems seen in other countries as lack of Orthodoxy, liberal midnset mixed with some conservatism, and ignorance/lack of obedience/polemics regarding some 6th Commandment related Issues.

Speaking about young people, -and the general populace-, following the Catholic Church Catechism, is seen as extreme. I guess that a conservative (ala Opus Dei, Legionaries of Christ, and similars) is an “ultra” for some people. And yes, I have read aout some people that were shocked that something like the SSPX exist.

Blessings!

🙂

I wish I knew of others in the diocese, maybe we’ve not met them yet. I did not know St Cyril’s had an Ordinary Form Latin Mass on Wednesday mornings but I cannot go to that as I am at work. If I got out of work at 3pm instead of nearly 4pm on Sundays, I’d go to the 4pm Sunday afternoon Latin Mass too even if it means a nearly 20 mile drive one way to it weather permitting.
