Hi.

Why do the lists of the 7 deadly sins presented by various Popes (pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth) not correspond to the Biblical list of them:

"There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 1) haughty eyes, 2) a lying tongue, 3) hands that shed innocent blood, 4) a heart that devises wicked schemes, 5) feet that are quick to rush into evil, 6) a false witness who pours out lies, and 7) a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.”

Thanks.

Well because you need to think about what each category is discussing. Its just like the 10 commandments, its not JUST coveting the neighbors goods,. theres many other categories that fall under it as well.

The “Deadly sins” are “deadly” because they are attitudes of the heart that lead to sinful behavior. The quote from Proverbs is not and does not claim to be a “list of deadly sins.” It’s a condemnation of sinful behaviors.

The “Deadly sins” are “deadly” because they are attitudes of the heart that lead to sinful behavior.
And logically speaking, “sin” is not the best way to describe the seven deadly “sins” as the use of the word “sin” in this instance evokes confusion.

We know that feeling thoughts of anger, slothfullness or greed alone, for example, are not sinful as they are normal human reactions to particular human experiences, but they are inclinations to sin and when recognised by the individual, can be dealt with and responded to in an appropriate manner that is not a precursor to sin.

The seven deadly “sins”, as you have alluded to, are more like seven deadly “vices” (or “habits” or “attitudes”).

I agree with the above responses, but i wanted to add its the intent that makes the sin. Pride being the mother of all sin, So to sin intentionally knowing one is being greedy, selfish, etc. is the worst sin of all.
