My High School Alma Mater’s Administration; A Flagship School for the Jesuits; needs to read this article. There is an ongoing debate within the alumni and parents regarding the non-tendering of two popular Theology teachers because they stuck with Doctrine and not other social justice victims. It permeates our Church.

I would add:
Ignorance of sources of sin
Historically spiritual writers emphasized 3 major categories:
The World, The Flesh, and The Devil

What are Catholics in 2017 are most likely to overlook:
“The World”.
I think when I was growing up in the 1960s I thought of this as just “peer pressure” or maybe wanting to keep up with the Jones, in terms of ostentatious material goods. It still includes those things, but also much deeper evils.

I have had relatives, including priests and a sister, who were glued to CNN or the daily newspaper. Some entire religious orders have been essentially lost to any kind of genuine Catholic ministry, because they are fixated on social goals set by a few decision makers in the media, who lead them on to “what’s trending now”. Many laity also. You know a source of evil is dangerous when people not only make no effort to warn against it, but actually honor secular conformity (i. e. staying up to date, or cutting edge) as a virtue.

I have not seen any Catholic publication, school, diocese, etc actually claim to be “advanced” in implementing the influence of the Flesh and Devil. But check the websites, you find many boasting of their Social Justice apostolate, etc, which are loud on whatever the Media has chosen to be loud on, and silent on whatever the Media has decided people should be silent on. My diocesan paper practically reprints whatever the (anti-Catholic) local daily paper chooses to emphasize, sometimes repeating the same wording and catch phrases.

But “The World” not only influences liberals. There is an anti-religious-authority movement across the board. Many labelled as “conservative” Catholic have rather gradually blended over the line, wherein they support “ministries” that encourage laity to reject “liberal” popes, bishops, pastors. What was intended originally to be part of the solution to disobedient Catholics sometimes becomes part of the problem. **All **of us are influenced by “the World”.
