In recent years the trend, unfortunately, is to deemphasize this feast. Many bulletin inserts or articles, or a catechetical text I saw seem almost embarrassed by this feast. They associate it with supposedly outdated concepts, such as Christianity being a fuller expression of the truth than other religions. They also associate it with what they consider intolerant Christians, those who think their prolife position not only acceptable for themselves, but should be “imposed” on society as a whole. Allegedly this feast is for conceited Christians, the kind who also want to return to Corpus Christi processions ****in public.

I am sure there are many who would like to change the name of this feast to “Christ the Facilitator”, “Christ the Chair”, or, best, “Christ the Friend”. We need to affirm the importance of this feast, more than ever in our time. Christians in general, and Catholics in particular, have adopted passivity as our default position. We need to emphasize Christ the King, beginning with our own conversion but also into the larger society. It is not humility that makes Catholics silent in the face of gay marriage, passive in view of massive abortion, or neutralized by anti Christian media overall. A humble person recognizes Christ the King. And tells others Who is King, lovingly.

Passivity in the face of evil is not humility.
