Remember, Mosul is where a lot of the fighting has been lately.
Our Ninawa province correspondent reports an 80 percent turnout in Mosul.
Mosul witnessed yesterday an unexpected turnout after hours of hesitation. People were afraid the security forces would not be able to control armed attacks on voting centers and voters. A source at the Mosul directorate said that the fact that a number of criminals were arrested the day before elections had a positive impact on the electoral operation, which met finally an unexpected success. He added that he expects a turnout of 80%, the registration period for voters in several voting centers having been extended for 2 hours after the set time of 5 p.m. This extension worried some Ninawa candidates, who considered it a breach of IECI instructions that might affect the transparency of the operation, especially because the elections are the first democratic practice, requiring a lot of caution to preserve the success it has enjoyed so far.
A preliminary ballot count suggests that the “Al Iraqiya” and “Iraqis” lists got the most votes.
The “Al Iraqiya” and the “Iraqis” lists obtained a majority of votes in Mosul. An official spokesman for the IECI in Mosul declared that the first hand account of votes in Mosul indicates that the majority of votes went to list “Al Iraqiya” No. 258, headed by Dr. Iyad Allawi, Interim Prime Minister, and the list “Iraqis” No. 255.

He said that counting is continuing and the result of the second stage of counting will probably be announced Tuesday February 1. In the meantime, the IECI in Mosul put together the polling boxes for the National Assembly and the Governorate Council and placed them at the headquarters of the IECI in the joint coordination center in Mosul. The same sources said that counting votes for the Governorate Council shows that the list of Mr. Douraid Mouhammad Kashmoula, Governor of Ninawa, and Dr. Khasro Koran, deputy governor and several former members of the council, all on list No. 162, has obtained a large majority of votes.
