Kids look for an easy target. They often don’t realize that what they do is going to kill the target. I’m not saying it’s okay but they don’t usually go out saying “let’s kill somebody today”, they just want the 30 dollars, phone or sneakers.

We say in the Christian worldview that age of reason is 7 so that is the age when children understand right from wrong, good from evil yet these “kids” are way past that age of reasoning and still do not comprehend that this girl/grandfather had value to others.

I can understand (name removed by moderator) view that those with drug addiction do not do rational things or see the world rationally. I wonder if stories should say whether the murderer was a drug addict but then again everyone would claim to be a drug addict to get a lighter sentence when there are real drug addicts.

They weren’t even looking to get money. “The Cross and the Switchblade” preacher got started on his mission after he read about one such killing in the news - several white teenage gang members had killed a disabled youth who was on crutches, just for the heck of it. He went to NYC with the intention of trying to help the killers repent and reform their lives.

There was a case in NH where 5 teen boys killed a young mother at her home and tried to kill her daughter just for the sake of “killing” and I am sure these “kids” will be out in community again.

These “kill for thrill of killing” cases thankfully are very rare and please let’s pray they do not increase but petty theft killings are not and happen on a regular basis.
Pick up a newspaper and there will be a petty theft killing.

No respectable father in the home is a major problem. Single moms trying to raise children and the breakdown of the extended family all create havoc. I get that. Add drugs and it is off the rails.

When to comes to groups it gets worse, it is more like the Chinese proverb

“One boy is a boy; two boys half boy; three boys no boy.”

That of course is not the case nowadays where we must all tolerate any kid under 16 shoplifting in the UK as we simply can’t physically touch them as it is more trouble than it is worth and even police are wary of doing so.

Fortunately in the USA there is still a good bit of enforcement against minors. As long as the police don’t shoot one, even if he is 6 foot tall and pointing a gun, or a realistic-looking fake gun, at them.

Again age of reasoning is 7 so at age do we draw the line and say that person may be endangering someone. There are certainly many 12 years old who have shot people. I am thinking of mass killings at schools. I am not advocating for police to shoot people, just asking what is reasonable.

California put in laws, Prop 47 where shoplifting is now a misdemeanor and many cities have District Attorneys who do not prosecute petty theft. These laws were to help drug addicts who may do petty theft.

I need to stop replying on here because I’m veering into an area where I may post something uncharitable. Let’s just say I have been frustrated with some of the cases involving alleged “Children”.

Thirty dollars does not seem like it will buy much in the drug market if that is the case. It is certainly a warning to anyone using a bathroom in a supermarket.

People desperate for drugs don’t need much for an individual fix, which is often all they’re thinking of. $30 might well get you high in the short term.

And we have to keep things in perspective. Obviously this is a horrible, tragic crime, and the people who did it should face justice. But this is a country of 300 million people. There are millions of people who use the grocery store bathroom in a single day and in 99.9999999% of cases the worst thing they face is those annoying motion detector soap dispensers. Point is I don’t think we all now need to suddenly be afraid to use the bathroom at the supermarket.

Instead, we should feel fortunate that bathrooms are available to use in supermarkets. I’ve been in some businesses that won’t let even paying customers use their bathroom, let alone the public at large. That’s why I will always buy something from any store, large or small, that does allow the use of their restroom – even if it’s just a candy bar.
