8th grade girls in NYC?!

My 8th graders want to take a day trip to New York City as their class trip. It’s approved for June 1st and we’re getting ready to book a bus. There are 13 girls and I’ll probably have at least 5 or 6 moms along as chaperones.

We’re going on a Monday and I’m told there are no Broadway shows on Monday. So, what else might 13/ 14 yr old girls like to do? They want to shop, but I want them to do more than that.

I’m thinking:

Mass in St. Patricks (we may have a local priest say a small Mass for us if possible)
Tour of NBC studios
Photo op in Times Square
Public Library (?)

I’m trying to think of sights all in the same vacinity so we can either walk or make just a few subway stops.

Suggestions?
 
Don’t live in NYC but what about any museums? I hear there are some great ones there and last I heard they were free.

Let me e-mail my friend who used to live in Brooklyn (I think, I get it mixed up). She used to go to the museums a lot but it has been a good 30+ years since she has lived there.

I have another friend who went to NYC for their vacation - being as she and her husband are both native New Mexicans it was quite an experience for them and their children, all those people - easier and faster to walk places than to drive! Unique for those of us here and in other large area, spread out cities to know that the only way to get from point A to point B is to hop in a car and drive!

The American Natural History Museum.

Man, I wish my mom would have taken me to NYC for Mass in St. Patrick’s and shopping!
 
I went to NYC when I was 18 from Australia by myself (don’t ask, lol) and so there were a lot of things I wanted to do.

I went to the Rockafella center. I went to Central Park for a walk. I even went in to Toys R Us on Times Square just cos it was sooo cool!

Museum of Natural History is amazing. Church runs are great!
I wanted to do a trip to Coney Island but unfortunately my friend that I made over there wasn’t interested.

Times Square was heaps of fun. Madam Tussads, etc…
 
I went there on an orchestra trip when I was just a bit older than the girls. Some of things I remember are the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and a cruise around the harbor, as well as some of the other things already mentioned.
 
I would definitely take them to the New York Tenement Museum – this is a unique museum and they’ve just reached the age when they’ll really be able to appreciate it. I think the museum will arrange special tours for school groups:

Yes, it’s expensive, but so are most of the other museums in NYC. (Visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art now costs $20!!!)

How are you going to move them around the city? Taking a group of 8th grade girls on the subway could end up being mass chaos without proper planning. Make sure you study the subway map in meticulous detail ahead of time – the NYC subway is more complicated than most and construction frequently shuts down stations and lines.
 
Museums, St. Pat’s, shopping, Central Park, Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty, take one of those tour buses that takes you across the city, maybe some shopping? Lunch in Little Italy or Chinatown? NYC is awesome! My city:)
 
I second the Empire State Building. I’ve been up there about 10 times by now and it’s amazing every time.
 
I would take them to the Metropolitan museum of art. The suggested cost s $20.00, but students can pay less.

The Empire State Building…might have long lines.

Statue of Liberty…Access to the Statue, I believe is still not permitted, but you can tour Ellis Island. (The Ferry makes 2 stops)

St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Also the “Cloisters” is an Annex of the Metropolitan Museum, but further uptown, it houses medieval art.

Central Park zoo, not a really large zoo, so It won’t use up a lot of time.

The Bronx zoo is very large, a visit there would take up an entire day…but really worth it.

The Brooklyn Bridge might be nice to see. You could walk across.

I grew up in New Jersey, and miss the NYC field trips…they were amazing, and I have fond fond memories. I’d try to take them to an off broadway play, like the Fantastiks, the longest running off broadway play around. It’s of course less expensive than Broadway, and they will love it, I think.

Other ideas:

Museums
Central Park
(You must let them go shopping, it’s quite an experience like no other!😃 )
Little Italy
Chinatown

Of course, this would take a lot of planning to get all of this in. I don’t recommend the statue of liberty…it’s great to be inside of it…but, the winding staircase is so narrow, people’s butts in your face as you climb up…I didn’t enjoy that part of my trips to NYC. LOL:p

Tour of Sirius Radio “The Catholic Channel” would be cooler than NBC.

Circle Line Tour is good - boat trip around the island to let you see everything. The double decker bus is also a fun tour.

The SI Ferry is a low cost way to see the Statue of Liberty from the water.

Eating, shopping -

Empire State Building 👍

Don’t forget ground zero and the memorial/museum that is next to the site. It is dramatic and will have a big impact on the girls.

As for fun/entertainment–do some research on an ethnic restaurant that you don’t have access to at home and go for lunch.

Ohhhh… go to Mama Leonies… I went there when I was 15 on a school trip… eat the buffet… totally awesome!!! I second the Ground Zero and mass at St Patricks too…
 
There is an exhibit at the Museum of the City of NY (5th ave and I think 103 street) on Catholics in New York. It is an exhibit of the history of Catholicism in NY from the beginnings until after WWII. There are a lot of school groups that go so you have to make reservations for a group tour. There are also exhibits of antique toys, and an exhibit on Broadway theatre that includes some costumes. There is a lovely garden across the street in the Northern part of Central Park, that even though there will be no flowers, it is still nice. It might be a bit of a walk from St. Pats but if you have a bus it would be a short ride.
 
I second the Cloisters. I’ve gone there every time I’ve visited NYC, which used to be often.

Do girls that age still love unicorns? The famous Unicorn Tapestries are at the Cloisters.

Gosh, is the Fantasticks still running? I saw it more than 40 years ago!

All of the above are excellent suggestions with the exception of Ground Zero, and that’s just my personal opinion. It is basically just a construction site right now.

The museums in New York are terrific, but several of the ones mentioned could easily consume an entire day. I’d save them for a more extended trip. Also note that the Catholics in New York exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York is scheduled to close at the end of this year.

Since you have only one day, I’d suggest a double decker bus tour so the girls could see as much as possible in the shortest period of time. Follow that with St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center, which are within easy walking distance of one another. Loads of shopping and places to eat lunch along the way.
