…First Communion BEFORE reconcilliation??? Dd just made her First Communion (so very beautiful and precious…anyhow…) I would have surely piped up (and changed parishes if necessary) if my dd would not have been required to go to confession before recieving Our Lord. At our parish, a child almost did not make her First Communion b/c her mother did not bring her to the required First Confession / Communion practice the Friday before First Communion. Thank God Father came in on time to have her make her confession (He is so very loving, that I could never see him not making time to hear her confession. Oftentimes, Mass will begin a few minutes late 'cause he will never turn anyone away from confession…) Pray for this Priest that he may forget his own agenda and align himself to the teachings of the Church. Priests have such a big reponsibility for the souls of the parishners…if is a sin and a shame that he could possibly be leading souls in the wrong direction!!:eek:
 
Really to tell the truth, there is not that much problem with Communion before reconciliation either. In fact all the eastern Catholic churches(they are under the pope) give the Eucharist to infacts as soon as they have been baptized and confirmed. All three sacraments occur at once. They have not confessed their sins and they will not for several years but they will continue to recieve the Eucharist. This includes the Maronites and the Byzantines.
 
:hmmm: …waddayaknow? Learn something new everyday. However, if this is a Roman Catholic priest, parish and parisheners, then reconcilliation first is the “rule” we go by!😉

He has been approached before on other serious matters and he ignores our concerns with what he is allowing…first communion before first reconciliation…pushing centering prayer…allowing lay person to give homily.

Any advice???

Father Gabrielle Amorth once said that the Eighth Sacrament is ignorance and it saves more then former seven put togather.
 
I agree with the post-er who stated that in the Early Church, there was no set number of Sacraments - it has only been over the years and during the different Councils of the Church that the “Official Seven” have come to be.

Years ago, after Vatican II (when they threw the baby out with the bath water), I received First Communion in 2nd grade and First Reconciliation in 4th grade.

Twenty years later, my oldest son received First Reconciliation a few months before First Communion.

Having lay people give the Homily/read the Gospel I believe is a “no-no” as general practice, but exceptions can be made. BUT, if the lay person is an ordained Deacon, he may give the Homily/read the Gospel without reserve.

I don’t think he is recalling the correct definition of a sacrament.
