I was recently told by an RCIA instructor that the victims of 911 would be considered “holy innocents” because they had no choice in their deaths. I cannot wrap my head around this. Most people don’t have a choice in their death… and what if their were non-believers in the building, they just automatically get saved? HELP!!!

what did the instructor mean by “holy innocents”? did he mean they all go to Heaven?

I’m not sure I agree with your RCIA instructors comparison, especially if he or she is speaking of them as “Holy Innocents” comparable to those who were killed by Herod and are considered martyrs by the Church. The reason these last are considered martyrs is because they died in a state of innocence specifically for the cause of Christ (even though they weren’t cognizant of this fact).

As a group, you can’t say this about the 911 victims.

I wouldn’t exactly call them ‘Holy Innocents’ :nope:

But I remember reading as a child something to the effect that a person who murders another takes the sins of that other upon their own soul. Since by their act they denied the other chances of repentance that they would have had in the natural course of things.

I don’t suppose that’s good Catholic theology either though - we’re all supposed to be prepared to meet God at any time, yes? But I’m sure the all-knowing God takes into account the fact that they were murdered in an untimely fashion.

The Holy Innocents were martyrs for Christ. I guess, given that Muslim terrorists hate Christians one could say the 9/11 vicitims were also martyrs for Christ. On the other hand, the attacks were focused on symbols of capitalism and western secularism, not Christ.

Yes, those victims suffered tragic deaths, but so do many, many people–that’s not what determines who goes to Heaven.

I believe the topic came up when discussing un-baptised babies. She was comparing the death of an innocent baby to the death of the 911 victims. I thought you had to believe in christ to go to heaven.

The Church doesn’t know what happens to un-baptized babies.

No, this is simply misguided.
