95 theses

Hello everyone,

I’ve been wondering when Martin Luther posted the 95 theses on the church. The pope (Pope Leo X) wanted him to recant 41 of the 95 theses. So that would let me assume that at the church was ok with the other 54 theses. I was wondering what the 54 theses the church accepted were and what 41 were asked to be recanted.

I feel when in discussion with some protestants sometimes it is hard to communicate with them over scripture alone, but using historical facts about the church and the reformation and what happened during that time could be an effective tool to use.

So if any of you could help direct me to what the 54 of the 95 theses that the church didn’t deem as heretical or even the 41 of the 95 that were deemed heretical would be of extreme help.

I’ve looked at a few sites but the translations seem to be different on every site I visit… so some consistency would be appreciated.

I can see which are wrong and which might be ok, but I am no theologen.

Interestingly, I did a Google on it and I saw no link explaining which ones where ok. Perhaps we should ask an apologist.

Here is a very brief explanation of the controversy:

Luther posted, or mailed, the 95 theses on October 31, 1517 to the Castle of Wittenburg. In response to the theses, Pope Leo X issued the “Exsurge Domine” in June of 1520, condemning 41 errors of Luther and giving him until December 10 to retract these teachings. On December 10, Luther burned his copy of the bull along with books of canon law and church rules. When the Pope realized that all hope of conformity was lost, he issued the “Decet Romanum Pontificem” on January 3, 1521, effectively excommunicating Luther from the Church of Rome.

According to Bokenkotter, “Exsurge Domine condemned forty one propositions drawn from Luther’s writings as “heretical, scandalous, or offensive to pious ears,” but without saying which were which.”
