Sometimes I wish I had that memory for remembering facts and figures like my bro in law does. Here goes, I did watch a show probably on History Channel or something like that. Anyway “they” found people who were the direct line on a island or something. They were convinced these people were descendents of the priests.

I know details, errrrr, but it was at least a yr ago. 🙂

oh chimera you jogged my memory,

thats it! it was a show that was looking for the tribes!

“On an island” ? ? The people of all tribes are walking NewYork and Tel Aviv. But how are they able to identify which of the 11 tribes is their land-name tribe, to re-place the complete nation of 12 tribes around Jerusalem?

M Cohan (see my post above) as a name similar to Cohen, but is Irish Catholic.

Cohen means “priest” and is of Levi. But what are the names of people which identify them as being in the other 11 tribes (apart from the actual tribal name?)

It was awe-inspiring when I walked into a synagogue and saw the Roll of the Law being carried as it was in Moses day. But apart from the tribe of Levi, and house of Aaron, how are the 11 tribes identified today?
chimera
They aren’t really. We believe they will be reunited when the Messiah comes.

Judah and Levi are the two tribes that were not lost. So it’s 10, not 11, lost tribes.

Many last names of Jews are based on their ancestor’s profession. (i.e. Sandler for shoemaker); or for the village from where they came from. I don’t know of any way to indentify the 10 lost tribes by the person’s last name. If I did, they wouldn’t be lost.

This may have been the program I saw, possibly it was the Pathans. I just remember they were cut off and it was a warm place. I dont know if they were the same as whats in the introduction on the home page* “Lemba and the truth behind their claim to an ancient Jewish heritage”*

Ezra and Nehemiah mention the sacrifices for the 12 tribes after the return from Babylon. "Israel " is in contrast to the Levites.
If Judah exists today, how do those people prove their Judah membership? Is “David” the defining name? Who said the 10 tribes don’t matter anymore, but will be united? Why would they be organised and then not matter for Messiah?

Who said they don’t matter? ALl Jews today are said to be from the tribes of Judah and Levi. This would mean, I assume, that it was the descendants/members of these tribes that were enslaved by the Egyptians and that were at Sinai.

You did. " They aren’t really. We believe they will be reunited when the Messiah comes." United means “one group” not 10 tribes. Jacob had 12 sons who equally fathered a tribe.

No, I said “They aren’t really” as an answer to the question how are they identified. And we believe they will be reunited. That doesn’t make them irrelevant.

Can you explain “re-united”? If the 10 tribes are united as 1 group, then the 10 distinct members of the complete 12 have ceased to be identifiable. Does that not contradict the purpose of having 12?

I don’t know. Reunited does not necessarily mean one group. That they will be identified and reunited in Israel.

I’m not sure what other purpose they have, according to scripture, or if it makes a difference as to whether they keep their individual tribal identity. At that point, all 12 tribes will be reunited under one nation.

I want to correct an error I made in an earlier post. I stated that the Jews today are descendants from those that were at Sinai, implying (or stating) that the other lost tribes were not there. In fact, the tribal distinctions were kept throughout our slavery, as evidenced in the book of Joshua, where the land is divided for each tribe. A couple of hundred years later, after the death of Solomon, the nations splits into two. The kingdom of Israel is formed by the 10 lost tribes. Judah forms the kingdom of Judah. Later the Assyrians conquor Israel and the 10 tribes are scattered in exile. Whereabouts unknown.

Jews today are assumed to be descended from Judah or Levites.

THe smart money regarding the 10 tribes is that they completly assimilated into the societies that they were exiled to.
