Is it ever proper to have a banner-bearer at part of the Mass procession? No, I’m not talking about burlap and felt banners made by children. I’m talking about a antique woven tapestry depicting the Blessed Mother with Her Son.

I read the GIRM (#120) and the Ceremonial of Bishops and neither mention banners, yet I still see them from time to time at different churches.

I have seen such standards used in processions outside of Mass or on the feast of the patron of a group (Altar & Rosary, confraternities, etc). I don’t know of any specific mention positive or negative in official documents, but their use probably falls under legitimate custom in many areas.

yeah, like those

Good point, it probably is a legitimate local custom in many locations. I know they do it at the University of Notre Dame for example. The photo of the procession is great but that’s not within the context of a Mass procession…

It is from a Corpus Christi procession that was part of Mass.
