Have you thought to just come right out and ask “A” WHY she wants to be the Godmother (not worrying about offending her with the question, since offending others doesn’t seem to bother her, it should go both ways)? It could be she, like many others, doesn’t really know what a Godmother is, maybe thinking it’s a “favorite aunt” honorary thing, or that it’s the same as a guardian, meaning she’ll get custody of the child if anything happens to his mother and father. I would also talk to “B”, and tell her that “A”, being an atheist (and one of the loud obnoxious ones, apparently), can only hurt her child’s spiritual developement, just the opposite of what a Godparent should do. First and foremost, a Godparent is supposed to pray for the child. Also, make sure the child gets to church if the parents for some reason can’t get him there, be there for him in other sacraments, etc. An atheist would do none of those things, especially pray!

Thanks for the reply.

She is one of the “loud obnoxious ones”, alas. My intent with this posting was more of concern for the little one than confronting “A”. I’m more inclined to have a talk with “B” which I will do soon.

This is a baptism, not a confirmation. Two sponsors, not one.
Only ONE Godparent is necessary- you can have one Godparent and one CHRISTIAN witness. It is my understanding that the Witness must be Christian.
