I sometimes listen to a radio program called Coast to Coast AM. On it topics such as The Occult Cryptozoology, Ufology, Miracles, NDEs, Miracles, the shroud of turin, the nephilim, etc. Basically X-Files, Unsolved Mysteries type stuff. Does the Church or the Bible teach against believing in these things. I know some of it is false like reincarnation and past life regression, but sometimes they talk about Exorcisms or Miracles which I know are true. My question boils down to this: Is believing in Atlantis, Bigfoot, Ufos, etc Un-Catholic?

I don’t believe so. Atlantis and the like are a matter of history and mythology, tehy have nothing to do with religion; same with bigfoot. As for the alien life, I remember reading an article on the subject a while back which basically was talking about how, despite what people of science and atheists may think, the existence of aliens will have absolutely no affect on religion.

Sampson,
Code:
I'd just be careful with it. Some people can take that stuff way too far. Its best to have your focus on Christ and the things of God rather than these things. Some people can be manipulated very easily when it comes to the 'unknown' in which many people are drawn simply because they are curious and inquisitive. That can be dangerous. Lies are dangerous.

I wouldn't go as far to say that it is "uncatholic" but like St. Paul in Ephesians says- all things are permissible but not all things are beneficial. If you find that you are spending a lot of time in it, then it is probably a good idea to turn that stuff off and come back to the Lord. If you are ever having a hard time on deciding on what to do for a fast, I would give up those radio programs and things of this 'unsolved mystery' type stuff. Spend more time in the mystery of God's love... SOOOOO much better for your soul!
God Bless!

I would suggest that you just keep an open mind about things that are discussed, but that there is no way to prove. Things that some people ridicule may have a simple, logical explanation, but our present experiences have no way to determine that. Just don’t be gullible and accept every far out notion that someone offers as truth.

Coast to Coast AM is a freak show. If you want to listen to it as pure entertainment, it might be OK. Be very careful. No Christian should put any faith the occult.

Try listening to EWTN radio, especially Catholic Answers Live. Be entertained and learn at the same time!

I don’t really listen to it anymore, its on too late. I was just using it as an example of the kinds of stuff I was talking about. I know the occult is evil, even things that seem harmless like the tarot cards or astrology. I looked for a station of EWTN near me, but on the website it said there weren’t any in Virginia which is where I live. I’m not talking about the occult though I know the occult is evil, but I meant things like aliens or the loch ness monster.

Not sure about aliens, but Nessie once made the acquaintance of a saint.

I listen to Coast to Coast because it gives an interesting, alternative view about things that have not been fully explained by science. Some of the shows tend to be anti-Catholic, however, so don’t be shy about turning it off if George or any of his guests start bashing the Church. The Church has no opinion about Atlantis, Bigfoot or UFO’s.

I sometimes listen to that show and I like it.

Just FYI, you can watch EWTN live on the internet. 🙂

I admit that I sometimes look at *some *of those videos that propose to have either nessie or sasquatches in them… Curiosity gets the best of me I guess. However, most of the time, I am very sorry I even wasted God’s and my time.

Even if there were to be a really clear video of these beasts there is no way to tell if they are truly faked anyway since we have quite a bit of technology today. I tell my nephews who have questioned me on this topic before that I know that there are artists who can, using their skill, come up with something convincing if they wanted to. Its just not something one should put any credence into unless it becomes a well known fact and there is solid 100% proof.

I don’t particularly hold fast to the idea that nessie, sasquatches, and the like are occult, but I think that since we are dealing with ‘the unknown’ that it still can be used for occult manipulation. From what I’ve read on some bigfoot websites at least, they seem to be doing that already- mixing it with occult ideas. There is just an overcast darkness to it too. Best just leave it alone. If you do look at it, look at it with a scientific skeptical view.
