A better Christian through Catholicism?

I was recently posed the following question by my soon to be father-in-law who attends a Church of Christ (Christian Church for those of you in more southerly locals)

“How would becoming Catholic make me a better Christian?”

We have been exchanging lighter questions up until this point, mostly to better understand where each other are coming from and my feeling is that he is trying to get me to say that there is no immediate benefit and that Christian is Christian is Christian. I fully believe that there are numerous benefits to being Catholic instead of any Protestant denomination, I’m just having trouble putting words to it.

Well you could be happy that he believes, “a Christian is a Christian” and leave it at that. You could have my father in law who believes “a Catholic is not a Christian, not a Christian”

If, however, you want to go down this road, I would start out by saying that it is Christ that makes anyone a better Christian. Then I would go on to say that Scriptures tells us to worship in, “spirit and in truth” and say that you would be doing this in the Catholic Church.

God bless

After seeing your reply, I was reminded that I will soon have a father-in-law who believes a Catholic can only be a Christian in spite of their Catholicism. I guess I had put that from my mind hoping that my actions and a dialog will have an impact on that opinion.

That is a difference, but your footing could be worse. I am sorry to say (depending on the individual) that sometimes there are people who just can’t be convinced. I am assuming that you are looking more at validating your faith than finding a convert no? Try living out your faith and let the pieces fall where they may. If that does not work, this forum will be here. 👍

Look up Church Militant, he is a member here. He helped me when I went through this with my father in law.

And as always,

God bless

edit I forgot to mention that I would look up some of his objections to the faith on this forum and in the CA library. There is no doubt that it has been covered and discussed already. If not, just start a thread about it. 😉

I read this earlier today in the forums, and I think it fits well. We know the Catholic Church is the Fullness of Truth. So not being a Catholic Christian is like buying a puzzle without all the pieces.

Also near and dear to my heart, being a Catholic Christian, we have the grace of the Eucharist! It’s like giving a Christ a Heavenly Email in our conversation, or Having him in his fullness, soul and divinity, next to you while your writing the email.

“How would joining the Church that Christ founded and availing myself of the sacraments he instituted make me a better Christian?”

The answer ought to be obvious.

Beyond that, it is only the Catholic Church which wrestles with sin in the fashion God intends us to.

As Oscar Wilde noted, “The Catholic Church is for saints and sinners only. For the rest, the Anglican Church will do.”
