While the notes and annotations certainly add to value of a bible, I believe the “scholarly” vs. “non-scholarly” dichotomy would go more in the direction of the translations. The “scholarly” translations would be literal translations of the early manuscripts. These are often more difficult reading than the loosely translated versions. The scholarly bibles would include:
King James Version
New American Standard Bible
Revised Standard Version (both Catholic and Protestant editions)
Douay Rheims
The “non-scholarly” bibles would include:
New International Versions
New American Bible
One that could probably fit somewhere between these two groups is the English Standard Version.
