Seriously? Kids say all sorts of things about homosexuals, and yes, statements about killing them included. Gay people are one of their favorite targets when it comes to things like that because 8 year olds don’t have a firm grasp on heterosexuality yet, much less homosexuality. Simply put they just don’t get it. This is not a huge incident against Catholics any more than it would be a huge incident against gays (and it certainly wouldn’t make the news). This is a little boy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about acting like a little boy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

Agree, and what the teacher should have asked him was, “And what are Catholics?” Would be interesting to hear his response, he likely has little idea.

Society nowdays over-reacts to almost everything.

My daughter told my wife that today a boy in her third grade class told her and another Catholic child that he wants to kill Catholics when he grows up. My wife said that my daughter told the teacher about it. So the teacher asked the child what he said, and he repeated it to the teacher. After that he was taken out of the class and sent to see the principal of the school. With secularism taking control of America there’s been a lot of hate directed at Catholics, but I wasn’t expecting this attitude to come from a third grader. My wife said she thinks the kid probably copied the attitude from his parents.

In this day and age, this needs to be reported to the police.

Good Lord, why? So they can take the kid out of the school in handcuffs and charge him with a hate crime? The police have enough to do, they don’t need to respond to every silly thing kids say on a playground!

I know of a principal who lost he job b/c one elementary school student said another had a gun. There’s no evidence there ever was a gun, but the principal was fired for not calling the police.

Have we not seen enough of these teenage shooters to take any chances?

This is absolutely not a hate crime. Just like its not a hate crime when ministers say that we should round up all the gays and put them in an electrical fence.

A hate crime is when you commit a crime against someone because of their race, religion, etc. No crime was committed, no threat was even made, and there wasn’t even a victim in all of this.

Attempting to somehow drag a small child through the justice system over a childish comment will only get them laughed out of court.

In the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre, I can’t see how this position can be defended. At a minimum a child of this age stating murderous intentions needs psychological intervention, and any school system sweeping such a mindset under the rug would be guilty of significant neglect of responsibility and potential child endangerment.

Concur. Even if the child doesn’t have violent intent, what about the adults he is mimicking?

It’s not a hate crime at his age although he needs to be taught some manners. However the quote attributed to ‘ministers’ about gays is probably an incitement to commit a hate crime

I think that what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary and other massacres proves what you said to be wrong. Sure maybe the kid was just saying this to get attention, and maybe he didn’t mean it. Or maybe it could be an early sign. But the school admin did intervene and probably talked with the parents about it. I think what they should do is make a note of it and see if it turns into a consistent pattern. If not then the kid probably just said it to say it and didn’t mean anything by it.

For example, a Christian baker that wouldn’t make a “gay wedding” cake with two grooms or two brides on top got sued and accused of a “hate crime”, a Christian photographer who wouldn’t take photos of a “gay wedding” got sued and accused of a “hate crime”.

The point remains that when anything happens to “gays” to offend them there are much more severe civil consequences. Like Muslims, the government treats them as a protected class. For example, heterosexual kids have always had to endure bullying from other kids, and nothing was done about it. I know because I experienced bullying a lot when I was growing up. But when was the last time you saw anything in the news about a heterosexual kid getting bullied? Now today a homosexual kid gets bullied and all of a sudden we see an “anti-bullying” campaign being launched to prevent homosexual kids from getting bullied.

I don’t know why you’re bringing gays into this, but it this would not result in civil consequences no matter who it was about because nothing that could even be construed as illegal or a violation of another’s rights occurred.

If you want to start getting the authorities involved every time a child says something inappropriate and offensive I think you’ll find that the education of children would become impossible as all the children would be at the courthouse. And at least where I was from most of the horrible things kids said were against Mexicans. Although African-Americans, gays, and Asians were close runners up. Why was this? Probably because children are still developing and have a hard time understanding anything that is different from them and their way of life.

Oh, and while we’re on this path let’s not forget misogyny! The offensive and filthy things that little boys say to and about little girls should be investigated by the authorities and they should be psychologically evaluated to make sure they aren’t future rapists or wife-beaters!!!

Or, we could recognize that kids are kids and help guide them so that they grow into mature and responsible adults. Instead of wanting this kid to suffer some sort of legal consequences to somehow get back at gays, we could just do what is best to get every child to develop into the best person they can be.

If you have issues with the way you perceive gays and Muslims to be treated you should start a new thread. You don’t seem to understand what a hate crime is, what a protected class is, and frankly none of this rant is pertinent to the thread.

You also don’t seem to understand that what you see in the media is not representative of real, day to day life. I’ve worked on anti bullying campaigns and volunteered with programs in schools. The focus is always on respecting differences, never sexuality.

Yeah, to illustrate how saying horrible things about a group of people is not a hate crime. I wasn’t drawing any sort of comparison between how catholics and gays are treated. If you want to rant about media portrayal and all the other stuff you’ve whined about in this thread, start a new one. This one is about the little boy saying that he wanted to kill catholics in school. It’s not about Muslims, bakers being sued, same sex domestic abuse, media portrayals, anything. Keep it on topic.

Update:

I just returned a call from the school’s principal about this. She said that during book reading, the boy was talking with another boy about the talk about December 21st being the end of the world when he made the statement. The principle told me that she wanted me and my wife to know that the incident was dealt with by the school administration. I think the news that’s been running about Sandy Hook Elementary probably also influenced what the boy said since my daughter said the kids had been talking about that, too.

The shooter at the elementary school was 20 years old, not 9. And no one has ever said that he made any sort of violent statement or any actions of that kind. If we have to monitor every remark that every school kid makes, we’re going to go nuts in a very short span of time.
