After much prayer and thought, I’ve discerned a calling to help other Catholics who, like me, are generally too busy with other responsibilities to participate in organized charity work. I’d like to ask for your (name removed by moderator)ut and advice in how to go forward.

The reason behind this is partly frustration. There’s no shortage of call for volunteers, but they always seem to ask for volunteers during the work day. For those of us who spend our days working to earn income to provide for our families and selves, and whose nights are spent taking care of our families, our free time happens in spare hours here and there.

What I want to do is organize the force of Catholics who have a spare hour or two to do some substantive good in the Name of Christ, to build the Kingdom even one brick at a time. I don’t want this to be an excuse for those who have ample time to waste it - I don’t want anyone to say “I spent an hour doing something for the Busy Person’s Apostolate, so I can play video games for twenty hours this week”, but I want to help move us to action.

My first idea is to organize letter-writing campaigns via the internet, ie ask everyone who cares to listen to send one letter to their local Senator and one to Nancy Pelosi urging them against any expansion of abortion rights. That’s where I run out of ideas.

Thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

I applaud you for your desire to advance the Kingdom…the world desperately needs to hear the message! I think you have a good idea with your lay apostolate. I like the idea of the letter writing campaign. You may even want to add something as simple as praying for various intentions. You can choose “an end to abortion”, “the intentions of the Holy Father”, “increased vocations” or any other number of things. People could pledge to pray for these intentions daily or to fast from something one day a week.

Late last year, I felt the same call to do something and founded The Catholic Truth lay apostolate. It’s still in the early stages, but The Lord has already allowed me to interact with people from all over the world. It started as a website (www.thecatholictruth.info) which provided Catholics with faithful resources to help them learn about the true teachings of the Faith, I then added a daily blog which I use to try to make people “think” about their daily walk as a Catholic and then added a monthly email newsletter which allows me to write more extensively about Church teachings. We also request prayer intentions and have the Carmelite monks in Wyoming pray for them. I can assure you that there are a lot of hurting people out there who need prayers. You might get some more ideas by looking at our website.

It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been extremely rewarding. I am honored that The Lord can use somebody like me to help spread the “Good News”. I’m sure He will do the same with you. Just remember to always remain faithful to the teaching of the Church and you’ll do fine.

I’ll keep your apostolate in my prayers. Please let me know if I can be of service to you in any way.

God Bless,
Gary
