We have a rule in the house that if you put on the A/C and cold snap comes along:

** TUFF LUCK**

The A/C setting will stay on! If it happens that the temp of the house falls below the desired temp setting and shuts off that is fine, BUT you may not turn the heat back on.

The reasoning behind this is I do not like the smell when you switch it from the heat to A/C or vice versa. Really bothers me. Last 2 weeks we had a stretch of upper 70’s and low 80’s so my mother decides to(with full knowledge of said house rule) turn on the A/C.

Long story short, it is 40 degrees outside and 66 in the house and now every1 is living with it. 🙂 😃

So any1 else have similar rule?

Nope - I love comfort now. If I am cold, then the heat goes back on.
But I understand where you are coming from.

No way. I live in Michigan, where temperatures go up and down like a yo-yo. At my house we don’t turn on the A/C until it gets up in the 90’s, but we’d rather be hot than cold; that’s just us. I hope there aren’t any babies or small children in your house – it’s not healthy for them to have the house get very cold, below 65 degrees or so.

We are so different on the temperatures we like that it would be impossible to stick to this. I like it 62 or so during the day, and tolerate it being 70 or so while DH is home and awake. When he’s asleep, I like to put it back down to 68. He would prefer it be 70 all the time, which would leave me hot and cranky(ier). In the summer time, I try to work my way up to living with it being 68 during the day.

Each baby I know has been as different about their preferred temperature as DH and I are. Some like it hot, some like it cold. It’s just important that everyone can tolerate whatever temperature it is.

No I am more of a if you (DH) turn it on right now I will follow right behind you and turn it off. With the fans and the windows I just don’t want the a/c or the heater on.

And, even though there are other people living in the house-- it’s all about you?

I don’t think so.

nope… my ac broke years ago and I can’t afford to have it fixed…

Is it your mom’s house? Sorry stringbeanduck, I would turn on the heat if I was your mom and tell you to live with the smell. But I am a mean, mean, mean mommy.😛

My rule is NO AC. I guess that is because we have no AC. 🙂 Luckily for me, I am pretty heat tolerant.

Nope, there are not any small kids in the house. I’m the youngest. Father seems ok with the rule.

You are 15. Your parents make the rules, not you.

You are being very disrespectful to your mother. Your mother can set the thermostat at whatever temperature she chooses and turn the A/C on/off as she chooses.

I suggest you spend some time in front of the Blessed Sacrament praying for the grace to obey the 4th Commandment, and speak to your priest in confession about such behavior and attitude towards your parents.

You’d be contemplating the error of your ways in your room with no TV, internet, or phone if you were to be so disrespectful in my house.

The smell usually comes from the system being off for the summer season. If you are going back and forth every couple of days it should not smell. The smell is from dust burning when the heat comes on for the first time. If it is smelly like that, then you need to have someone come in and clean your furnace and duct work. Then you will have no smell and everyone can be comfortable.

Ah. Well this changes my perspective. Your mother can do whatever she likes with the thermostat. If your father disagrees with her actions, it is up to him to discuss it with his wife. Family rules are family rules but the people in charge can change them at their discretion.

I’m sure you have been respectful towards your mother even though you disagree with her actions. I’ve read some of your other posts and you seem to be a very level-headed young person.

My father used to turn the ceiling fan on, all the time, even though it annoyed me and even if I was playing a game that got blown all over the table by the fan. Now I’m older, my father is deceased, and I’d give anything to have him come in and turn the fan on high. I wish I hadn’t griped at him all the time. I bet when you’re an adult, there will come a day when you switch on the heat, smell that distinct odor, and have fond memories of your mom.

You’re fifteen years old and you’re already making house rules that your mother must follow? Why do your parents allow this?

Plus, I agree with the previous poster…if your house fills with fumes after a short period of no heat, then something is wrong with your heating system. It should take months for that kind of residue to build up.

Try turning your heater on today and see what happens…there should barely be any smell.

like your rule, people play roulette with the thermostat here, not unusual here in early spring to have heat on in am, A/C on in the afternoon (same with the car)

we have an air cleaner and HEPA filters on this unit, and have the ductwork and system cleaned every 2 years, and that burnt dust smell is now gone.

if turning on the heat causes smell, it should be checked by a professional and probably cleaned, at very least new filters. could be mold building up of heating system has a humidifier, too. but potential for dangerous gases is high depending on type of fuel used for heat.

AMEN.

Also, apologize to both your father and mother.

We have to remember that we don’t know if stringbean came up with this rule on his own or if its something that his mom decided. This might not be about respect so much as just some good natured ribbing on between string bean and his mom.

My mother is ok with the rule but did get a little cold in the house. Believe me if my mother was truly bothered by it she would definitely override me and I would obey. And guys its not like I’m putting my foot down and being disrespectful. In our house there only 3 of us: father, mother and I. We joke and play games a lot.

I guess you would have to live here to understand. The rule is kinda silly way for mother and I to bond. She laughed the many times I said “your gonna be sorry.” Now were both laughing. Father thinks its funny too.

Dust mite or something gets in there after not being used for a while. The A/C unit and heater both smell after not being used for a while. Like I said it’s a silly rule; I could live with the smell if say my younger niece were to stay over. Although she does like the cold. Anyways after a day the smell is gone; the unit does not have any problems.

I apologize if it sounds like all was being the authority of the house. I thought the smiles would make this a funny natured post. :o

Sometimes the written word does not convey intent well. If you meant it as a joke, it didn’t come across that way.

poor, poor stringbean duck. He is getting jumped on by a bunch of mothers who will make certain that he respects his own mom.😛

I understand the joking part, stringbean. I tease my kids a lot also. My husband and oldest son have a running joke that if Josh becomes rich, he is going to buy me a big house with a large library but he is going to just dig his dad a whole in the back yard to live in. They find this hilarious.🤷
