Well, I guess you wouldn’t enjoy it at my house:
70-71 in winter (a sacrifice made to save on gas bills)
76-78 in summer when my wife is home,
78-81 when i’m home alone
. Of course it’s warmer in the bedrooms upstairs, but I still sleep in my sweats. I’m cold without them no matter what the temperature.To the OP: Such a rule would not work at all in the more northern states. We could have a week of days in the 80’s here, and then a week with low’s of 32. Also if it smells that bad, there is a problem. Have your mom call a HVAC tech. Seriously, a problem left unchecked could lead to a serious CO problem at some point.

stringbeanduck–first your name is hilarious second, I have a 15 yr old son who is shy to the world, but at home, is quite a funny character. We joke a lot too in the house…like …he will say…‘how many times must we go over this mom…i make the rules, remember?’ i mean, it’s funny. at times, it’s not funny. about once per month–it’s not funny. 
But, I guess I know where you’re coming from…but the bills must be high in your house, if the AC is on when it’s cold outside!

Yikes! 70-71 in winter is a sacrifice? I set mine at 68, and that is about as warm as I can stand it…I must be lucky in that I am more tolerant of cold than hot.Well, I guess you wouldn’t enjoy it at my house:

My sacrifice is made in the SUMMER when I set that AC at 78…which is WAY to warm for me in these humid Texas summers.

No I agree this would not work up North. Our system is during late Winter and the early Spring we leave the windows open. If it gets too warm in the house but after a while you just have to put on the A/C. The question is when are you ready? Right now it is 76 in the house and 62 outside. Tonight we’ll get down to 39 outside.
