This is an important subject.

Scientology may be the largest and most sucessful group to abuse the title “religion” but they are not the first and will not be the last.
My question to felllow Catholics: as a member of a democracy how do we define religion to allow freedom of worship while preventing this kind of abuse?

The anons have made great advances in the time since the last post in this thread almost a year ago. They reciently uncovered more evidence of human trafficing and scientology attempts to expand into the third world. I love watching the progress at whyweprotest.net. You should all check out the show.
It’s as complicated as “Lost” and stranger.

I’m bumping this thread because of my son’s reaction to the commercials that CoS is now running on television.

They call it “The Way to Happiness” and in light of CoS practices I’ve read about on this thread it’s hard to think of as anything less than downright evil.

Through these ads, they are targeting young people, even young Christians, who know there is a higher moral order. The values expounded on are good values and the commericials are clever and entertaining. I mean, would that the Church could have such a savvy marketing department! But given where it leads, it’s truly a road straight to hell.

My son made me watch these commercials last night. “Look mom! I don’t know who is doing these commercials, I think it may be Scientology, but aren’t they great?” And they were. Really clever, and TRUE. (We are so hungry for truth). His reaction: "I think I want to learn more about Scientology, just to see what their theology is."

I decided to beat him to it, and I can’t believe what I’ve found.

Moms and Dads, please watch these commercials. Be aware of the fact that this is a national advertising campaign. We saw them during the prime-time “So You Think You Can Dance” program that our family loves.

Become versed in Scientology so that you can warn your kids against it and tell them the truth about it before its too late.

OP here. Thanks for bumping this, Magdelaine. The new CoS videos are clever and well-done. I am glad you did the research. One important resource everyone should be aware of is the St. Petersburg Times series, The Truth Rundown.

The SP Times has reported the endemic violence and brutality of David Miscavige, the leader of Scientology. He has repeatedly assaulted his executives and forced them to assault others. Two of the highest-ranking executive defectors from Scientology have spoken out for the first time, Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder. Two others were interviewed by the Times as well, Amy Scobee and Tom De Vocht.

CoS’ response was to get lawyer Monique Yingling and PR spokesman Tommy Davis, to refute the critics by publicly revealing information in their purportedly confidential confessional folders.

It is also important for Catholics to know that the Church has now spoken out in criticism of Scientology, which should encourage Catholics to get involved to put an end to these horrific abuses. Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Primate of Canada, spoke out on two occaisions in February. It has gone unreported by the Catholic and secular media outside Quebec. The blog For Great Justice has extensive reporting in English - links below.

It is also important to know that three lawsuits have been filed by three CoS employees alleging human trafficking and coerced abortions. These former members were forced to work 100 weeks while being paid 39 cents an hour. They are Marc Headley, his wife Claire, and Laura DeCrescenzo. Claire was coerced into two abortions. Laura was coerced into abortion once while stilll a minor. Their stories and information about the lawsuits are found at Jonny Jacobsen’s superb Infinite Complacency.

Have your son watch Amy Scobee’s video interview from the SP Times if he wants to start educating himself on Scientology.

Now that Cardinal Ouellet has spoken, it is time for Catholic activists to come forward and help the effort to expose the human rights abuses of organized Scientology under the leadership of David Miscavige. If anyone here is interested in helping in the struggle you can pm me.

I get asked questions about Scientology since I live in a city they (CoS) apparently consider in high regards. The more and more I learn, the more upset I become. I don’t doubt for a moment that they’ve coerced abortions. They are certainly a cult.

Hmpfh, whatever. I won’t let myself be intimidated by CoS. Thanks to the fact that this information is being shared, I’m sure the depravity of their actions will cause their cult to crumble.
