I am looking for a Saint or list of Saints that didn’t start off that way. All the bio’s I have found on the internet give info concerning WHY there lives lead to sainthood.

I need to know of saints who took the LOOONNNNGGG road to sainthood for my son who believes that all saints and priests for that matter, have always been perfect.

I know about St. Augustine, but I was hoping for someone more recent…

Thanks for any help given.

That saint would have been perfect for his dad, for when he was alive, he could really put them away. My son is 11, and thank God, NOT into drugs and alcohol.

How about St Francis of Assisi, party animal, ladies man, cross-dresser, profligate with his dad’s money, dissed his parents, got in fights, all the things a well-to-do young medieval gent was prone to, became one of greatest saints, single-handedly reformed Church of his day, which was in worse shape than ours.

John Russell Jr:
What about St Mathew Talbot. He is the patron saint of alcoholics. There was no AA then. He couldn’t help his drinking addiction. Yet he persevered and was canonised.
I’m not recommending alcoholism as the way to perfection though.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif
Actually, he is not canonized yet! I don’t think he is even a Blessed. I have a book on his life that was written by Susan Helen Wallace, FSP in 1992.

At the back of the book is a Prayer for the Canonization of Matthew Talbot. It is -

Lord, in your servant Matt Talbot you have given us a wonderful example of triumph over addiction, of devotion to duty, and of lifelong reverence for the Most Holy Sacrament. May his life of prayer and penance give us courage to take up our crosses and follow in the footsteps of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Father if it be your will that your beloved servant should be glorified by your Church, make known by your heavenly favors the power he enjoys in your signt. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Matt Talbot turned failure inside out. May all who read his story gain renewed courage and realize that it’s never too late to begin again.

I have a cool saint that may appeal to a boy. St. Ignatious Loyola. Soldier turned Saint.
When he was old enough, he became a page, and then a soldier of Spain to fight against the French. A cannon ball and a series of bad operations ended his military career in 1521. While St. Ignatius recovered in the hospital, he wanted to read books about battlea and military endeavors but the only reading material available were books on the lives of the saints. This was when he decided to dedicate himself to becoming a soldier of the Catholic Faith.

He eventuall started his order called The Society of Jesus, or Jesuits. There are 38 members of the Society of Jesus who have been declared Blessed, and 38 who have been canonized as saints. He died at the age of 65.

I think that is pretty cool.

Oh I have another one…St Augustine of Hippo ( St. Monica’s son). **Party boy turned Saint.**St. Augustine of Hippo is the patron of brewers because of his conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions. His complete turnaround and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with a particular vice or habit they long to break.

This famous son of St. Monica was born in Africa and spent many years of his life in wicked living and in false beliefs. Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Divine Truth anymore. Through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvelous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally became convinced that Christianity was the one true religion.

This info was obtained from the www.catholic.org.

GERMAINE COUSIN

http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintg12.gif Also known as Germana Cousin; Germaine of Pibrac; Germana

Memorial 15 June

Profile Daughter of Laurent Cousin, a farm worker, and Marie Laroche. Her mother died while Germaine was an infant. A sickly child, she suffered from scrofula, and her right hand was deformed. Ignored by her father and abused by her step-family, she was often forced to sleep in the stable or in a cupboard under the stairs, was fed on scraps, beaten or scalded with hot water for misdeeds, real or imagined.

Here is the web site.

Dear friend

St Paul the Apostle former murderer and persecutor of Christians.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

p.s. All Saints are sinners, all have sinned and as such are just like us, it is that they have led extraordinary lives in striving for union with God.

True my brother from Dublin is not even called Blessed, but maybe he will be someday.

Saint Giacinta Mariscotti! She lived the life of luxury, took the advice to become a nun, and slowly, very slowly, abandoned her luxury-loving ways and adopted the life of poverty. It took her years to abandon her selfishness and so on (I don’t think she’ll mind if we say this about her). Her sloth in change persisted despite facing, numerous times, clear indications from confessors that she needed to change. She even begged forgiveness from her companion sisters after causing scandal, and nonetheless continued to be very slow about changing. We are all continuing our conversion to Christ, and thanks be to God, even slowly, we are able to convert.

Although not canonized yet…***Venerable Charles de Foucauld *** is amazing. He was a frenchman who went very deep into the life of sin. If you know about Fr. Corapi, they are similar, but Charles possibly went even deeper into sin. He inherited a huge sum of money which he spent on parties and importing women to his bedroom. After being kicked out of the army for his conduct, he was converted in the desert where he ended up spending many years as a hermit. He is awesome.

Also, for a young child you might not want to share this one, but for older ones it would be great. Bl. Bartolo Longo was actually a practicing satanic priest. He is to my knowledge the only ex-satanist to be beatified. He was brought back to the Church through a Dominican and Bartolo gave his whole life to spreading devotion to Jesus and Mary through the Rosary in Pompeii. He was even mentioned in the Holy Father’s letter on the Rosary just a few years ago. He is always a sign of great hope for me. If he can be converted (and he was a satanic priest), there is hope for anyone (EVEN ME!) as long as they are alive in this life. God is good!

another recent example would be Dorothy Day who was a communist, an atheist, and even had an abortion before she converted. She’s not canonized, but might very well be someday.

Matt Talbot was venerated in 1925. He was a very humble and pius man who felt the strains of his addiction till his last days.
