A choice at time of death?

I did mean while people are still in the body. I can relate one example from my own life. My dad had a very dear friend that he met online. Her name was Paulette. She moved to Rhode Island to be closer to him. They were not dating but just very close. Well Paulette arrived in Woonsocket, Rhode Island as a kindly but lapsed Jehova’s Witness. My Dad, kind of a cafeteria Catholic, managed to bring her into the Church. She developed a very strong devotion to the Blessed Mother. After a few years of moving she began having complications from her youth. She had, as a teen been a hippie, been involved with intravenous drugs and spent one night with the Manson family. Due to her drug use she had contracted Hepatitis. She kept on going for a while. Eventually she needed to have part of her liver removed. She stayed strong and held onto Mary and Jesus, and in her diary she referred to God the Father affectionately as “Daddy.” She tried bargaining, and pleading but she then developed complications and a raging infection from the surgery. She was hospitalized. Still, she prayed for strength. She began to realize she was going to die. Paulette’s lungs began to fill with fluid and she was then pumped with enough drugs to knock out a horse. There was no waking up from the coma that had been induced. She had a tube in her mouth that sucked the build up out of her lungs, and her body heaved and wretched while unconscious to expel the mucus. My dad held her hand, terrified as his best friend lay dying. He then relates and I’ll paraphrase here, “She suddenly stopped spasming, and lay back. Her eyes opened and sitting up, she followed someone unseen from one side of the bed to the other, impossible with the amount of drugs in her system. She then broke out into the most radiant smile and nodded to the unseen figure. She calmly closed her eyes, layed back again and flat lined.” We are certain that Paulette was greeted by the Queen of Angels.

Several months later, in the dead of winter, my Dad, deprived and very sad about the loss of his friend took a walk down a path they used to frequent in the warmer months. Paulette, has always busted him about not being able to hear the crickets with his aged ears. On that February day in Southern New England there would be none to hear. Still he walked along, and prayed the Rosary. Suddenly about ten feet in front of him, leapt into the middle of that dirt path, a cricket. “Strange”, he thought, and it jumped out of his way as he approached. Within a few feet, out jumped another, and after that another for thirty or forty feet. It then dawned on him…“Even from heaven you lovingly bust my chops!” And he smiled. And then he laughed.

True story

We all get numerous times to choose God and to go back to Him. We just don’t always know if and when it will be our very last chance.

Also, death is a process. Someone once said that the soul may not leave the body immediately - but if it lingers for a short time, maybe they get that last opportunity.

This could be that the body remains warm for a short time after death takes place, and in religion class, the teacher mentioned that sometimes priests have been known to anoint in this kind of situation if it isn’t clear that the soul left the body yet.

Looking at it another way maybe Satan turns up in your last moments to try and tempt you one last time.
