Would you say marriage and religious life/priesthood are similar in the following sense that when you are preparing for marriage you are in love with your soon to be spouse and when you enter the priesthood/religious life you are in love with the Lord and the Church?

Of course!

And a deacon once said to me “A good priest would make a good father, and a good father would make a good priest.”

Yes although I would approach it from a different perspective. In priesthood, like in marriage, you are called to give over your entire life - being a priest, like being a husband, ins’t a (day) job; it’s a way of life.
