My name is Katie. I’m 28. I had a falling out with the church when I was about 22 (so, about 6 years ago).
A few weeks ago I finally made the choice to return to mass. Surprisingly (or perhaps NOT so surprisingly) I remembered MOST of the mass (Once a Catholic, always a Catholic?). But only at first…
I was going through the motions, surprised by how much was coming back naturally, until… suddenly everything sounded different.
I was SO confused.
At first I wrote it off as the parish being different (they didn’t have kneelers either). I tried a different parish and the changes were the same.
Did the mass undergo some sort of massive change to the translation?
If so- could someone direct me towards a detailed article? I tried googling it and found some hits from a few years back, but none of them had detailed descriptions/reasonings for what happened and why changes were made/what the changes are.

I was so lucky to have come into the church the year the changes were made - there were still “cheat sheets” in the pews with the new translations, which made it easy for me as a convert to follow along. Most seem to have been eradicated now, but I don’t understand why. Catholic churches do very little to help newcomers follow along in the liturgy. 🤷

Every parish I attend still has the helpful cards in the pews with the new translation.

I have seen many of the parishioners looking towards the back of the missals. I looked here for a source to memorize because it’s just this side of impossible for me to leaf through the missal while juggling my 10 month old. He’s a very adventurous 10 month old and loathes keeping still for anything. I’m just grateful he isn’t a cryer. Just a kicker, climber, hair puller, and jewelry chewer. 😛

Took me about a year before my tongue naturally said the new responses, which after I attended a tridentine Mass, realized that the new responses were actually the responses before the Novus Ordo.
