A correlation between horror movies and demonic activity?

I very much agree. The most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen is George C Scott’s, The Changeling, from 1980, which I saw in the theater at it’s release. I couldn’t sleep for days after that and when I did drop off it was to images of tiny empty wheelchairs rocking on their own. No fancy effects whatever, just outstanding lighting, camera work, and a supremely suspenseful story line with music to match. My wife and I still agree, it’s the scariest thing we’ve ever watched. And I’ve now seen it at least 8 times.

There are a lot of people out there (including some exorcists) who believe horror movies can open one up to demonic activity.

Where does this belief come from?

How can one become possessed by watching actors dress up like ghosts and goblins and demons pretending to do violent things?
The correlation in my opinion lies on our choice. I could have chosen to watch any other movie genre & many other forms of good imagination. Why would I choose to imagine demonic activity in horror movies/ stories for?

Scary movies/ stories give us adrenaline rush. This is why it seems exiting. But there are other more positive movies to get ourselves entertained.
Christian art is full of vivid depictions of demons and evildoing. Even the bible portrays characters possessed by the devil and even an encounter with satan himself.
Whats written in the bible is not of our own choice of imagination. So that makes it very different.

Another example: an extremely gruesome fiction, compared to a real murder documentary that focus not on the gruesome part, but rather on the facts of the murder.

The gruesome fiction is a choice, while the documentary is fact reporting an event that truely have happened. The fiction is much more harmful spiritually, because fiction can be created in any other ways, but one choose to make a gruesome one, while the audience choose to get entertained by it. This is a form of ‘contract’ in our mind/ soul to tolerate things which basically an opening gate In the spiritual realms.

This is the reason I only watch PG movies or movies rated NC16, but I would check out the clip first just in case.

Whenever there are gruesome parts , I would close my eyes and cover my ears, so I dont need to see/hear those.

I have not watched any horror movies for more than 25years now.

Why do people assume people who watch horror movies are entertained by the gruesomeness? That’s like saying people watch Jurassic Park to see people get dismembered by dinosaurs or Its A Wonderful Life to see Jimmy Stewart attempt to kill himself. The gruesomeness is appalling and the audience is hoping the main protagonist escapes such a horrible fate.

Nobody wants to see Laurie Strode get stabbed to death by Michael Myers nor Linda Blair to remain a demon possessed girl who mutilates her body. This is where the entertainment aspect comes into play. We follow characters who are in extremely dire and terrifying situations and hope they find a way out of it.

Movies like The Exorcist literally scared people away from the occult (as mentioned earlier by another poster) because before then, they didn’t really have much of an imagination of what exactly kind of evil and horror people are dealing with. It’s one thing to read a bare boned account of a demonic possession; its a whole other thing to see a visual representation of one.

I saw this on a Reddit post. Did Fr. Ripperger really say this?

And also, I heard that Fr. Ripperger sated that horror movies allow demons to come through the screen. Is that true?

There was also a Catholic priest in good standing who played a role in the film. He also served as their spiritual advisor for accuracy. It’s a great film.

I think the cause is people throwing themselves into a hysteria. Unfounded accusations of Satanism have been levied against Dancing, Harry Potter, Spongebob Squarepants, Dungeons and Dragons, and even Babysitters!

In reality overt demonic activity is extremely rare. A demon is less likely to possess your body and more likely to plant the thought in your mind that keying an annoying neighbor’s car would be satisfying.

Even some PG movies have some gruesome elements in it, even short moments, like the Jurassic Park.

Closing eyes only work when it is only short moments. If the whole movie is about demonic activity or gunshot or sword play with blood splashed all over, then it is impossible to close your eyes the whole length of the movie. Better not watching them altogether. Go out from the cinema if I get caught in one.

I am sure many are disturbed by it.

It is not an assumption: people do continue watching, and hollywood make it more & more gruesome, some not even horror movies.

Some say The Exorcist quite accurate in depicting the worst demon possessed person as in real cases.

I have never watched that movie, and never will.

I do not need to know evil in order to be able to stand against it. In fact, one is stronger when keep himself/ herself from all evil.

The evil ones fear us who are strong in the Lord’s way.

The question is whether you choose to see those, or avoid those.
