Alright. I have a few questions about things I’ve done and wonder whether or not I should confess them. I’d greatly appreciate if anyone could give me some sort of insight.

In my speech class, we were doing impromptu speeches and the catch was, that the class would choose the topic when you were out of the room and you needed to speak for a minute on the subject. I was afraid to go at first because the topics that my classmates would choose were rather sexual and I’ve been told that saying sexual jokes is a sin. Though, the answer varies on whether it is mortal or venial. Since no one was going after hte first couple of groups, I decided to go just so I could get the extra credit points…and because impromptu speeches are fun for me. The topic they chose for me wasn’t as bad as the first two, but it was still sort of bad. I’m almost afraid to repeat the topic in case of sinning again. But I need to get an answer. My topic was ‘How to get a big butt like Kim Kardashian’s.’ I thought, “Ok. Not so bad…” But afterwards, I still felt bad about it. Was I sinning in speaking on the topic?
Also, I needed to clap and vote for my classmates to say who did the best as far as the speech format and stuff goes. Was I sinning in voting and clapping for them after they said these jokes?

Also, I am an anime fan and part of my being a fan involved cosplaying(that is, dressing up as characters). Am I sinning my dressing up as a guy character even though I’m a girl? It doesn’t arouse me at all. I just love playing these characters.

Also, at one of the gatherings I went to, I climbed onto rocks by the lake to take pictures even though there were signs saying not to. I was told this isn’t a sin and even if it is it’s only venial. Would I need to confess this sin?

I really need help with this. I want to know whether these are sins and if I need to confess them. I may only be being scrupulous…as I know I often am. Please help. nd God bless you for taking the time for me!

Butts don’t have to be sexual. You could make it purely medical, by talking about weight lifting and eating right foods. If that wasn’t achieve could mention plastic surgery augmentation and just lay down the facts.

Anime dressing isn’t a sin, since its purely for fun. Halloween would be a major sin then.

You don’t have to clap if you don’t want too.

I made it about doing crunches and stuff. So I guess I’m okay with that part.

That’s a relief! I’d be heartbroken if I couldn’t cosplay anymore!

I suppose you’re right. I just didn’t want to seem like a jerk. But I guess that isn’t a good excuse.

Maybe just ignore the words when it’s sexual, and just appreciate the thoughts of the person, and the goodness of it.

Personally I would clap, but I am not sure if that one was a sin.

Scenario:
The whole room is clapping and smiling, and you’re in the corner stoic without a clap. People will start to notice, and then they will be talking. They ask you why.

“I don’t clap because it’s sexual; it’s against my morals”. Then they will think you’re a snob or just plain rude. Like a pharisee.

I think Jesus answer this by going into the gambler’s home, and accepted them. Not that I am comparing them to gamblers or sinners because most of them probably aren’t and just doing a speech like anyone else.

Yeah. That actually makes a lot of sense. It’s especially difficult not to clap because I sit in the very front! :o

Welcome to CAF!

Jesus once said that, to pure eyes, everything is pure. So long as you keep pure, by God’s grace, during cosplaying and watching anime and even giving speeches on getting big butts, you’ll be fine. Trust in Jesus, and ask for His Mercy every day, and when you sin, ask for forgivness. For every time that we invoke His Mercy, especially when we ask for forgiveness, we give Him glory and He swoons down to us like a lover, for God is Love.

Thanks, Nick. 😃 What you said makes a lot of sense. I always try to remain faithful to God, but sometimes I wonder if I’m being faithful enough. I have a habit of worrying about things forever, even if they may be small, and that might be part of why the priest I’m going to temporarily (my regular confessor is on vacation) cuts me off before I’m even halfway done. Sorry about my rambling. I just wanted to say thanks again. 🙂

It doesn’t sound like you’ve done anything wrong…you can always ask your Confessor in case of any doubt.

My one comment is that it sounds like this is sort of a scandalous speech class. Who is the teacher who allows class exercises to deteriorate into crude sexual humor? Do you feel comfortable talking to your teacher and explaining that this sort of thing makes you uncomfortable? You don’t have to mention religion or anything…it’s just a matter of public decency. You shouldn’t be made afraid to participate in class. There might be someone else in the class who feels the same way as you do, and is just too timid to say something.

Welcome to CAF!

It’s a bit of a liberal college so I’m not completely surprised. Usually in prepared speeches, people keep them clean. But I suppose the whole point of the impromptu speeches was to make the speaker uncomfortable and therefore, be able to bring out what speaking skills they really have when put in the spotlight and under pressure. Impromptu speeches are my forte, but sexual humor definitely is something I wouldn’t appreciate having to talk about.

I see.
I have to say that while you have definitely not done anything wrong in this situation, it is still a tough situation. I am probably one of the most liberal people on this forum who still considers himself a Catholic, and I’m a college student too so it’s not as though I was raised in the golden 50s or anything, but still, I personally think that the prevalence and acceptance of sexual humor in today’s society is corroding culture and destroying souls, turning them away from what is beautiful and good. So if the time comes when you have to make an impromptu speech on a subject they give you, and it is a crude or demeaning question…I don’t know, you may have to ask yourself what your response would be. I think it would be awfully brave to stand up for purity in that situation, to be as radically counter-cultural as the Church sometimes calls us to be…but that’s just my opinion!!

Good luck in all you do! 🙂

Peace,

Thank you. It’s great to hear from someone who is around the college age like I am. I’ll think about this a lot and consider what you’ve said in great length. Thanks so much for your response! God bless!
