Is Jesus pictured still alive or dead on the crucifix? I have never thought of that prior to today and then it just hit me.

Thank you for answering my question!!

I just had a look at the nearest crucifix to me here at the computer. Jesus is represented as alive because He is still holding up His head. If he were dead His head would have slumped downward.

Never thought about it either. Thanks.

I think it can be either way. If the wound in His side is visible, that was done after He had died. If His head is up and eyes are open, He’d still be alive. On some crucifixes, you may not be able to say for sure one way or another.

Hi,

Now this is interesting. I just did a walk through. And some of mine he’s pictured dead, and some of them he’s alive, and a couple I cannot tell.

Never really considered this.

He’s pictured dead.if you look at the crucifix real closely i believe you can see the wound in His side.therefore He would be dead.

There is just one Jesus, and He is alive.

The crucifix symbolizes His passion. He was alive and fully conscientious, even rejected the narcotic offered to him.

My husband and daughter wear a crucifix…If I didn’t already have so many nice pieces of Catholic medals, and simple crosses, I would too

Bishop Sheen said a cross without a corpus is a man without a mission…If I ever buy another cross it will have a corpus

I like that quote by Bishop Sheen, I will have to remember it. Thanks for posting it.

God Bless.

Note that a plain cross has no nail holes, no blood; it has never been used. It is not the cross of Jesus. It is your cross waiting for you. I picked this up from the Eastern Churches; I think one or more Western orders also regard it that way. I used to give the RCIA participants a plain cross to wear during Lent each year to remind them to do penance during that time of preparation.

The crucifix symbolizes His passion and death. We believe that Jesus suffered, died and was buried and on the third day he arose from the dead.
