Hey guys I’m new to this forum and am looking for a deeper understanding of God, I am in search of the truth. I am a catholic and I am really trying to learn more about catholicism. I really am looking to find a way to build a deeper relationship with God and learn thoroughly w the traditions and practice of the church and where they stem from in terms of scripture and history.

Now my question to my brothers and sisters on this forum do you guys have any suggestions on where I can find a book website or article on the history of the church, its practices and traditions?

Also can anyone here guide me as to why certain christian denominations place certain emphasis on certain parts of scripture and not others?

For theology from a lay persons’ perspective, I got the most out of reading Ludwig Otts’ Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, William Jurgens’ Faith of the Early Fathers, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the Bible beginning in the NT. The Catholic Encyclopedia and the various concilliar documents, encyclicals, etc. available from the Holy See website (to mention one source) are also instructive. For more general apologetic and history-oriented materials the Catholic Answers site has much to offer. As long as you keep asking and seeking, God will satisfy the desire to know the truth.

Hi there and welcome to the forums -

This site is great for instruction. I first came here several years ago and and increased my knowledge immensely. Just browse around and ask questions.

I also suggest that you explore the writings of the first christians after the bible was completed: Ignatius, Justin, Iraeanus, Augustine, the Didache, etc. These people expose the very early belief of the church and you may be surprised to see how Catholic they are. A wealth of information.

I do not know how deeply you wish to get into it. Of course, pray to God specifically what you want. Like, “Please Jesus I wish to follow Your Church as You taught us. Please help me do this.”

Then, depending on how deep you want to get into it, these are resources I recommend:

The Catechism - this will teach you the faith in nice paragraph form. It’s nice cuz you can search the index for a certain subject and just go to that paragraph and read. Here’s an online Catechism if you don’t want to buy one. 🙂

Then of course there would be introductory books on the faith. Maybe read “The Compact History of the Catholic Church” by Schreck. I also hear good things about “Short History of the Catholic Church” by Jose Orlandis.

Peter Kreeft is also a good philosopher and Catholic who has many books, like Prayer for Beginners or Fundamentals of the Faith. He also has a bunch of free audio at his website.

Of course, also if you are into audio, like listening to MP3’s, you might want to browse different topics from the Catholic Answers Live radio show over here. You can even search there on different subjects.

If you want a book comparing different Christian stances on salvation, I’d recommend The Salvation Controversy by James Akin.

Some other books I have found interesting are the lives of the saints. Sometimes the best way to come to the truth is to see it effected in someone else’s life. The Spiritual Letters of Padre Pio (Secrets of a Soul) are very filled with love and hope.

For simple methods of enhancing your spirituality, read up on St. Therese the Little Flower. She was known for her simple life and devotions, and I think this could very much help you. Perhaps someone can recommend a good book on her.

If you are looking for ways to discern what God would like you to do, I recommend a talk on discernment by speaker Phil Krill.

If you want to get deeper, I would recommend reading the writings of the Fathers of the Church.

There are also some very wise spiritual people over on the Spirituality forum here. They could probably answer something if you had a very specific question. 🙂

For Scriptural bases, I second some of the other websites referenced. Or you could check out Patrick Madrid’s Where is That in the Bible and Where is That in Tradition.

God bless you. 🙂

If you wanna learn about your Faith, don’t waste your time on the forums. Go to the main page of this site, then click library, and go to Faith Tracts. I almost lost my Faith before this website’s faith tracts and the This Rock periodicals showed me that our Faith was one of philosophical reason, historical reason, and textual analysis, as well as supernatural Faith.

This book is tops…for any reason 😃

In the Presence of Our Lord - the History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharistic Devotion by Father Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R., and Jame Monti ISBN: 0-87973-920-7

The following website is a simple, concise, and definitely to the point, pastoral letter on the Holy Eucharist. Read it slowly in sections, meditate on it, pray with it, share it. Even though you already know what is in it since it is primarily basic information, it will warm your heart and affirm your mind.

www.rockforddiocese.org click Meet Bishop Doran.
Then click Bishop Doran’s “Pastoral Letter on the Eucharist”, 1997. or try www.rockforddiocese.org/bishop

Blessings,

A really good video that is very informative on church history, faith and practice is Steve Ray’s new documentary on the “Apostolic Father”. If you google that title, you will find the direct link to this video. It’s good.

In Christ,
Santos
