I have noticed that some priests while celebrating mass, may have more than one chalice on the altar since one or more will be used to distribute the Precious Blood to the faithful. My question is this: After pouring the wine into each vessel, should a drop or small amount of water be poured in each vessel too? I have seen some priest just put water on the chalice they elevate and not the others. Is this allowed?

Thank you for your reply.

Dear TL,

Not only is pouring the drop of water into only one chalice allowed, it is prescribed. Mixing the drop of water into the wine symbolizes our sharing in Christ’s life. As the priest pours the drop of water he says, “By the mystery of the water and wine my we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” Multiplying the symbol serves no purpose. Once is enough.
