I know of someone who is a protestant and they insist on going to communion in the catholic church when they attend with their spouse. When it was mentioned to them they said that they deserve to go up and receive as much as anyone else because they feel it is an important reenactment of the last supper. It was explained to them that it is offensive to us as Catholics because we believe we are taking in the true and living body of Christ, but no changes were made.

What can be done in this situation?

You might tell them that when they are offered the body and blood of Christ and they say “amen,” that they publicly declaring that they believe the church’s doctrine on transubstantiation, or they are publicly telling a lie.

He can go to a Protestant church if he wants to commemorate the last supper.
Only Catholics who believe it is the Body and Blood of Christ can receive communion.

1 Corinthians 11:23-29, especially v. 29

They should not receive if they do not “discern the body of the Lord”
At the very least, Corinthians establishes a biblical basis for the idea that in some cases, people should not receive.

Here is the DR translation:
[BIBLEDRB]1 Corinthians 11:23-29 [/BIBLEDRB]

Tough deal in that a good % of the parishioners @ a Catholic Church may not be fit for communion. Where do you draw the line?

It’s up to you to let them know, and let them know its a sin to do so (or if they don’t believe that, it’s a sin to lie and say “amen” after the priest speaks and offers the host if they don’t really believe it).

After you inform them…its up to them. Your job is done. You don’t know the state of their soul, their internal attitude, if they secretly went to confession the hour before and now believe, or what. So once you inform them, that’s as far as you can take it. The rest is up to them, and God’s mercy.

Have him speak to the pastor before mass if there is time.

I agree with this. If they truly think it is okay, than have them voice their opinion to the Priest.

Of course, they could always start attending RCIA and convert, then there wouldn’t be a problem! 😉

Agreed. Have them talk to the priest. If nothing else the priest will know who they are now and will be able to withhold communion from them.
