I have a difficult situation on my hands, and I am looking for advise about my handling of it, as well as best ways to handle it, naturally from the way that we as Christian Catholics should.

My wife and I have been married for about 16 months. We both married late - I’m 52, she’s 48. About two months ago we got a dog, a pug who is 18 months old. My wife loves this dog and it brings us much joy. We thank God for our pets because in their own way, the demonstrate to us the love of Christ. Well, about two weeks after we got the dog, my wife got a little coat for it, as the dog did not like the severe cold we were having and would not do her business when we took her in the yard. The coat is pink and has a little hood. Its a bit like a ski jacket. Well, the dog just loves it! She thinks that she is just something else when she has it on!

Anyway, my wife took a picture of the dog wearing the coat, and put it on Facebook. Various of her friends did commented with ooohs and ahhhhs and how cute, etc. Then along came my 15 year old neice who wrote:

honestly, how do you think that poor dog feels in that thing? how would you like it if someone just came up to you and put something like that on you against your will? i doubt you’d like it much. plus, pink’s an ugly color anyway. it has helpless female written all over it.

Now granted – I have real problem with my sister allowing my niece to be on Facebook in the first place (coupled with the music – you know the stuff I mean – that my sister lets her listen to – and thats not all) ! This comment illustrates one reason why. The comment hurt my wife and made her cry. So, I called my sister and left a message expressing my dismay. When my sister called me back, I was told that my wife should grow up, my niece is entitled to her opinion, and that she would not apologise for being rude to her aunt.

As one might expect, tempers flared, I names got called, I called my niece a few choice words, etc. All the while I am defending my wife, saying that I will not allow my niece or my sister to be rude or disrespectful or hurtful to my wife. I am then informed that my neice doesn’t like my wife because ‘she took away her uncle’.

So, I slammed down the phone. Next thing you know my mother calls me – and begins yelling at me telling me to that I am one who must apologise and repeating all that my sister has said. By this time, I was in enough control, that I hung up the phone leaving my mom ranting.

Things stand a bit sad today. I am hurting so much inside because I love my family. My mom isn’t talking to me - its been 3 weeks. My sister and I talked, calmly, but there will no apology coming. My wife is very hurt and doesn’t want to see them at all.

You have to understand my wife in this. She is a wonderful sweet person who doesn’t have a hurtful bone in her body. She has a childlike innocence about her. And most important, I will defend her against those who will hurt her. For evil to get to her, it has to get around me, and I won’t let that happen!

So here I am am. My wife and I are a very happy couple. We love each other so very much, we pray together, we are active in our church, etc. This incident has been the first time that she has been defended by her spouse (she was married before, divorced (and anulled) the guy over abuse etc, and we were able to get married now). This never happend with her ex.

My mom won’t a daughter in law that she could be friends with, that she could do things with. My wife always showed her total respect and love. The same goes for my sister and her relationship with my wife. Yet it all changed over the comments of a 15 year old.

How can I restore the bonds between us (my wife and me) and my family. I have apologised to my sister for my temper. I emailed my dad and spoke with him, but my mom won’t budge. I, of course, won’t budge on the fact that what my niece said was wrong and rude – or in the defense of my wife. I feel she should apologise and be help accountable for her words. If that come forth, then my forgiveness is there.

What does everyone else think?

In Christ’s Peace.

Tony

This is all very unfortunate. In the first place, I do think your wife overreacted and so did you. Who cares what a snotty 15 year old girl thinks? Yes, she was a disrespectful brat to write a comment like that. On facebook I’m sure that one can remove comments on ones personal page and that is what your wife should have done.

That having been said, you have apologized. Now you must stick by your wife and continue to defend her. This girl does owe her an apology and the fact that your family doesn’t see this is telling. Your mother sounds like a petty troublemaker and grudge holder.

I think you will have to give this time. Let your mother sweat it out. Your niece is a spoiled, disrespectful brat.

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

21Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I suggest to just be as humble as you can, forgive and love even more than you did before. For we have all done wrong in the eyes of God. Yet He forgives and puts our transgressions behind Him. We will be hurt by others in this life that is for sure, it’s how we handle that hurt we will be judged on. God Bless!

I agree… who cares what a 15 year old thinks about some pink dog coat. Your neice was soooooooo insensitive to post that… what she did was wrong.

However, YOU were wrong to get on the phone with her mother and call her daughter “a few choice words.” That was just totally uncalled for. And I’m certain you hit on your sister allowing her to listen to music you don’t approve of and have a facebook… newsflash… almost ALL teenagers have a facebook… it’s how they communicate, and your wife has one so how wrong can it be? I think you blew it all up and yes, you should apologize IMO.

Your neice was wrong, but she is just a dumb kid who had an opinion about pets wearing clothing… what you did was far worse. I think if any groveling needs to be done, it needs to come from you. I can’t believe you hung up on your mother!!! :eek:

Bottom line: You are upset, your wife is upset, your sister is upset, her daughter is upset, your mother is upset. Why? Because of a comment about a dog in a pink coat.

Seriously. I think you need to do what it takes to fix this.

Sorry Tony,
But I really think you all need to grow up…
What is this?.. you are not 12 year old school girls…

Pretty much all teenagers are on Facebook these days. All 3 of my teens are - as someone else said, it’s how they communicate. Notices of parties, dances, homework, and photos are shared there. I think it really started as a college thing, and then moved into high school; now many people are on it.

I think you are ALL being petty.

Delete her comment from the page and move on…(good grief!):rolleyes:

***For crying out loud! Just ignore your disrespectful niece, let your wife do whatever she wants with the dog, and MOVE ON! I cannot believe you all would let this come between you. Perhaps your wife overreacted??? Perhaps your niece is a brat that gets away with rude behavior??? Your mom should never have gotten involved…YOU are a grown man and all you have to do is worry about your wife, forget all the other stuff!

Good luck with the apologies…let’s see who the “bigger person” will turn out to be…

C’mon! Life is too short to be fighting over a dog’s outfit…:rolleyes:***

Now granted – I have real problem with my sister allowing my niece to be on Facebook in the first place (coupled with the music – you know the stuff I mean – that my sister lets her listen to – and thats not all) ! This comment illustrates one reason why.
Your sister, however, has the right to parent her children in any non-sinful manner that she chooses. Facebook is morally neutral. It is not intrisically evil. Some people do use it for sinful means and evil ends, but that does not make Facebook it in and of itself sinful or evil.

The only time I would have a “real problem” with my sister raising her daughter in any particular way would be if it involved sin (i.e. encouraging her to get an abortion or something truly serious). But even then, there’d be only so much I could do.

Also, she’s 15. I will not go so far as to call her a brat, because I don’t know her and I don’t know if this is her general behavior, or a case of a young woman involved in a “cause” who doesn’t know how to state her beliefs with a certain amount of etiquette.

Think of when you were 15. Did you ever make any stupid comments? Did you have belief’s or causes that changed as you got older and more experienced? Did you at times not think before you spoke?

She is a 15 year old acting like a 15 year old. An adult who allows a family relationship to disintegrate “over the comments of a 15 year old” (your own words) is himself acting like a 15 year old. Seriously, I’d expect this behavior out of a high school clique. It was a single comment, you haven’t told us of a lifetime of mean comments. Are you going to hold the one comment against your sister?

That being said, I think the best way for your wife to handle it would be to send her a nice picture of the dog happily wagging his tail in the coat and ask exactly how the dog doesn’t like it seeing as how he (or she) is happy.

Lastly, forgiveness should not be based on the actions of another person. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. St. Maria Goretti forgave her attacker before he asked for forgiveness. Keep that in mind…

I sympathize with your wife’s shaky self image. You are sweet to want to defend her. The way to do that would have been to make comments to her in private about dumb teenagers. Tell her to delete the comment and move on. Take her out to dinner and have a great time. Immature children grow up. Teenagers are like that.

But no, you didn’t do that. First mistake. I see a bigger issue that didn’t start with the dog picture. It started long ago with your mother, who apparently lacks manners and discretion. She raised a son and daughter who also lack manners. Your sister is passing on the family jewel of rudeness, so to speak.

Maybe if you all grow up quick in a few years your niece will grow up too. But you all have to show her how or someday she’ll be yelling insults at someone on a phone over her rude daughter.

As for “stealing her uncle” that’s a bit much. Boundaries, people? Her mother raised her to think your role in life was to dote on her at the expense of a life for yourself? She can’t be happy for you? No one communicated to her she wasn’t losing an uncle, she was gaining an aunt?

And as a formerly abused wife, if I listened to my new husband yelling at his mother and sister and calling them and a female child names on the phone and watching husband hang up on people, I’d wonder when it was going to be my turn to be treated that way.

I mean, you’re 52 and you’re calling a 15 year old child names? Dude! Come on! Your issue isn’t with facebook. The bigger problem is her mother is somehow giving her the idea that in order not to be a “helpless female” she has to be unChristian.

So you’re all wrong.

Except for the dog. It had no choice in the matter but to put the coat on and walk.

None of this is about a 15 year old’s rude comment. That was just the spark that lit what obviously was a powder keg just waiting to go off.

How do you fix it? You invite sister and niece out to dinner and have a great time and tell them they have gained an aunt. You don’t talk about pink coats. All is forgiven. Show them some of that Christian charity.

Then go over and visit your mom. Make the first move.

And by the way, that’s pretty bold to think you are so powerful to stand between your wife and evil forever. No can do. She wasn’t crying about the comment about the coat. She was crying over the hostility by someone she is trying to befriend. You did not help make that transition easier for her. Your yelling made her acceptance issues in the family worse. YOU are blaming the teenager. Over there THEY are probably blaming your wife for crying about a dumb comment. You communicated to them they can’t have an opinion without getting shouted down by you.

May I gently suggest your wife needs some transitional counseling to help ease her into a new family that has issues of its own. She has old wounds that you have no idea how some of them will never heal. She needs help to be able to navigate your tempestuous family and your temper without resorting to old knee-jerk responses to her pain from her first marriage. I sympathize with her. You need to apologize to her for not helping her more. When you fly to someone’s rescue you don’t need to flatten your mom, your sister and a female child to prove a point. You just look like someone who bullies women. Has your attitude toward your mom and sister and niece changed now that you have a wife? You don’t need them anymore? Is that what they are talking about? Join your wife in counseling to get a grip on your temper and learn how to deal with women who annoy you before your wife inadvertently steps on your toes someday and you lash out at her.

Pray for grace.

Make the first move and the second and the third and keep trying till your family realizes you won’t bully them. Since your mom and sister didn’t write here, I’ll keep my comments about their own stupidity to myself.

I think that everyone involved overreacted. Who cares what your niece says? She might be jealous that the sweet lil doggie is getting so much attention. lol

I honestly don’t think it was a good idea at all, to tell off your sister, and say some nasty things about your niece…over a dog’s coat? Yikes. Pick your battles wisely. ;)Just my two cents.

Praying that you all can allow this to blow over…and reconcile.

Times really have changed in the Catholic Church…when I was growing up, if I had said somethine even remotely out of turn to an aunt or uncle and was reprimanded by them, I don’t recall my parents yelling at the the aunts and uncles, I recall getting at the very least a stern look if not a tongue-lashing that would make a drill sergeant cringe.

I wasn’t raised Catholic, but I had the same experience as you growing up. I think it’s not so much a change in the Church, but in society/culture as a whole. If I had said something like the niece did, I have no doubt that my internet privileges (had there been such a thing back then ;)) would’ve been taken away for some time, and I would’ve had to make a formal apology to my aunt and uncle.

I totally agree with this. Let the apologizing and making nice now begin!

I agree with those who have said that all involved need to grow up. Have your wife take your niece off of her facebook, apologize to your sister for calling your niece names, encourage your wife not to take silly things so personal, kindly tell your mother that you are taking care of any misunderstandings–in other words be the bigger, better man and let the nastiness go. It really is not worth all of the fuss and damage to relationships.

I agree with you here… IF the niece was the one posting, I would totally tell her that what she did was so insensitive and why does she feel the need to say such mean things to her aunt and what’s up with feeling like the aunt is the bad guy because she “stole” her uncle… seriously, does the niece think SHE might have married the uncle? Umm… illegal… and strange. So yeah, that’s what I’d say to the niece… grow up and be NICE or nobody is going to want to be around you - family or otherwise.

But the niece wasn’t the one asking… it was the uncle and although I think the niece was a total brat, I think he was sooooo out of line for calling her a few choice names and blowing it all up. Show me the mother who wouldn’t get her knickers in a knot if her daughter was being called names and her parenting skills were being attacked? So although the niece started the fire, he threw gas all over it and now everybody is upset and his wife is saying she wants nothing to do with all of them…

The whole thing could’ve been avoided if, when the Aunt read the mean public comment on FB, she would’ve responded with, "What’s up with you? Why so nasty? And since when does the color pink = helpless female? It’s just a color. Sheesh. Sounds like somebody needs a nap? 😛 "

See - totally puts the bratty girl in her place without being too nasty back… nobody is on the phone yelling… the OP’s Mom isn’t involved and nobody gets hung up on…

That’s what I would’ve done. 🤷

You are right! I called my sister and told her that her 17 year old daughter was being disrespectful to not only me, but my father and that I would not put up with it!

I will not allow my kids to be on facebook, even when they are teens. Nothing good can come of it. That’s how they communicate? Please, pick up the phone and call them, talk to them in school. Every kid I know has a cell phone stuck in their hands ( another thing that is not going to happen at our house) So I don’t buy the fact that this is the only way to communicate!
The niece needed to be called out on her behavior. Just because it was on facebook, doesn’t make it okay. Sounds like the mom doesn’t think her baby can do anything wrong, probably why the kid acts like this!
Stick up for your wife, tell you mother, as nicely as possible, that this does not concern her, and move on!
Oh, and have you wife take your niece off of her “friends” list on facebook, then she won’t have to deal with her garbage!

I think maybe your dear wife should apologise to your mom, sister and your niece for your sake even if she is not in the wrong, and maybe your niece will come to her senses then and would also apologise eventually for your sake.

Hi Tony: First off, delete your family as friends on facebook and be more careful who you agree to accept as friend on Facebook. That said, I think that everyone over reacted and there was a lot of immaturity involved. Your wife should be respectful of your mother & your family BUT that does not mean that she has to hang out with them or develop a close relationship with them. If you get any negative messages on facebook, just delete them and forget about it. Life is too short to get all worked up over something so stupid.

Personally, as a dog owner, I see nothing wrong with the dog coats. My sister, who is a widow, has a chihuahua and she has several coats and even dog booties for her dog Maggie.

Give it a little time and then make things right with your mother. Life is too short for such unpleasantness. If things are touchy with your wife & your moher, tell her to be respectful but keep her distance. Give it time and as they say, this too shall pass.

Good luck, Amy Beth:thumbsup:

Really quite unfortunate that such a situation arose from a simple little sweater. To be perfectly frank I would agree your wife overreacted, and quite honestly you were out of place as well to go off the way you did. I think the best thing you can do is be the bigger person and be the one to apologize for your part in this silly mess and hopefully everyone else will take the hint and acknowledge what they did wrong as well.

Well, had it been my niece I would have went to her house, bypassed my sister and wrang her little neck. Forget what some of these insensitive yahoos are saying on here. Your wife sounds like a sweet sensitive person. I know many people like her. Your niece on the other hand needs to be taught a lesson in respecting her elders. If she is saying **** like that to you and your wife, imagine what she is saying to her own mother and possibly to your mom.

My sister though would have handled it properly, cut off a switch from a tree and tanned her hide.
