Second, I must admit to finding the posts effectively saying that my wife and I should forget it to be appalling. I find them to be implied approval of my niece’s actions. Our reaction comes from the fact if we, at age 15, had shown disrespect toward an adult would have been severly punished. My niece is a child, and as such has not earned the right to chastise the actions of an adult. Her words and the unwillingness to correct her are simply unacceptable.

I think her actions were rude and intrusive but not nearly as outrageous as you are making it sound.

***Even if they were, *** I would still say to just move past it.

I repeat, you are not her mom or dad, it is not your job, or your place quite frankly, to try to be reprimanding her in this way. You are beating a dead horse here. I might add that when you called her the b word you pretty much gave her grounds to completely disregard anything you tell her after that.

You say that you would’ve been severely punished for such conduct? Well, guess what, she’s not you, you’re not raising her, and times are different from when you were growing up.

You just reminded me of that Simpson’s episode where:

Bart: Who the hell are you?
Reporter: I’m an investigative reporter…and I must say that in my day we didn’t talk to our elders that way.
Bart: Well this is my day, and we do.

:rotfl:

I don’t know about the others mentioned but,
Kelly Clarkson is probably one of the tamest rock/pop singers that there is today and thank goodness probably the most talented.

Ummmm… sorry. Amy Winehouse takes that spot.

Well, not the tame part… but the talent part, definatly.

Just a few more notes. First, my sister and I have patched things up for the most part. This is a growth and learning experience to be sure.

That said – two points. I am afraid that I still don’t think that a singer whose hit record is entitled ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ is who I would want a child listening to. I am truly saddened that the influences on my niece’s life come from the likes of her, the aforementioned Amy Winehouse, and the Pussycat Dolls.

On the subject of parenting. I see this on three levels. I have a role in parenting as an uncle. But that role is heightened as I am her Godfather. This is a duty, vis a vis, faith that I take seriously. Unfortunately, I have largely ignored, and for that matter ridiculed by my mother. Finally, I still recall a day when the whole block parented all the kids. The responsibility of parenting does not, in my eyes, end at the fence between the lawns.

And finally – whoops three points I guess – respect in action and speech toward an adult is of all times and sadly lacking today. Too much influence of the aforementioned Bart Simpson – who – BTW – would not be on the TV in our house.

Tony you called your Godchild the b-word to her mother and then complain of respect being lackingtoday. Any credibility you had as a Godfather just disappeared when you stooped to that level. Adults do not call children vulgar names. You need to get in control of your own actions as an adult before you can teach a child. Children see hypocrisy from a mile away.

I am glad you patched things up with your sister. Next time keep your emotions in check.

That sums it up nicely.
