I’m curious if any of you wonderful people have any great quotes about “submitting” or “submission” from the Bible or any of the Early Church Fathers’ writings…

I’m satisfying my curiousity…

Thank you all in advance 🙂

Gen 16:9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands

There is one of them.

Interesting…

But, I’m honestly curious about what we are required to do in submitting to God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, our spouse, authority, etc, etc…

A couple of synonyms of submit might get you stated:
Surrender
Yield

How would you apply this definition of submit in relation to God?

“to yield oneself to the power or authority of another”

Perhaps a better word would be obedience.

The Catechism always gives scriptural references for the teachings of the Church, so it is a good source for finding not only the verses that pertain, but the proper understanding of those verses.

Luke 10:17-20:
The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Romans 8:7-8:
For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot, 8and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Galatians 5:1:
For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

James 4:7:
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Clement, Chapter 56:
Let us then also pray for those who have fallen into any sin, that meekness and humility may be given to them, so that they may submit, not unto us, but to the will of God.

Irenaeus, Against Heresies:
For this reason the Lord also said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good deeds, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16) And, “Take heed to yourselves, lest perchance your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and worldly cares.” (Luke 21:34) And, “Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning, and ye like unto men that wait for their Lord, when He returns from the wedding, that when He cometh and knocketh, they may open to Him. Blessed is that servant whom his Lord, when He cometh, shall find so doing.” (Luke 12:35, 36) And again, “The servant who knows his Lord’s will, and does it not, shall be beaten with many stripes.” (Luke 12:47) And, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46) And again, “But if the servant say in his heart, The Lord delayeth, and begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat, and drink, and to be drunken, his Lord will come in a day on which he does not expect Him, and shall cut him in sunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites.” (Luke 12:45, 46; Matt. 24:48, 51) All such passages demonstrate the independent will151VIII-1d-151 of man, and at the same time the counsel which God conveys to him, by which He exhorts us to submit ourselves to Him, and seeks to turn us away from [the sin of] unbelief against Him, without, however, in any way coercing us.

There are more, but I think you get the point…

Ephesians 5:21
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

2 Chronicles 30:8
Do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were; submit to the LORD. Come to the sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God, so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.

Job 22:21
"Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.

Hebrews 12:9
Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!

James 4:7
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
