Went to Mass twice while in OKC and came away with a new respect and reverence that my parish in Missouri pays to the Eucharistic Celebration.

I think there were multiple liturgical violations but don’t have any real basis for my complaints, it just made me feel upset and seemed to lack proper respect for the Blessed Sacrament.
  1. Is it approprate to hold hands during the Our Father?
  2. Should people interact with the priest during the Homily?
  3. Should extraordinary Eucharistic ministers place the unused Eucharistic wafers into the tabernacle? It seems to me that only priests or deacons should approach.
  4. Shouldn’t the Celebrants bow to the tabernacle and alter?
No one bowed to the tabernacle at anytime during the Mass.

Please someone educate me.

  1. Is it approprate to hold hands during the Our Father?
Yes. I have seen people who have been married for 50 years still holding hands during the Our Father. Did you mean to ask is it appropriate to join hands? No.
  1. Should people interact with the priest during the Homily?
Yes. I have seen elderly priests lose their equilibribrium during a homily and folks rushed to their help. Did you mean should people be in dialogue with the priest during the homily? No.

Please someone educate me.
That was not intended as a slap at Gilbert. I think it is clear where my sarcasm is directed.

  1. Is it approprate to hold hands during the Our Father?
**No. But many do it. Visiting a parish at New Year, I saw people bending themselves in awkward ways to hold hands with people behind them. Makes us grateful for our own parishes, I suppose. **
  2. Should people interact with the priest during the Homily?
**Short answer- No. But can depend on situation- I have seen many priests and bishops get children to come and sit around sanctuary at Family Mass. **
  3. Should extraordinary Eucharistic ministers place the unused Eucharistic wafers into the tabernacle? It seems to me that only priests or deacons should approach.
**Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may not cleanse vessels, etc after communion they must pass the ciborrium/ paten/ chalice to priest or deacon or instituted acolyte (if you see one). **
  4. Shouldn’t the Celebrants bow to the tabernacle and alter?
**We must all **bow to the altar when we pass in front of it, and genuflect in front of the Blessed Sacrament when we pass in front of it.

  1. Is it approprate to hold hands during the Our Father?
No. In the Novus Ordo Mass there is no directive for them to hold hands, or hold their arms up as the priest does. However many people are doing this which has led to distraction and bewiderment among some of the faithful, as seen in your post here.
  1. Should people interact with the priest during the Homily?
No. There is no directive given for the congregation to interact in any way by answering questions or even respondind “YES” as Baptists do during a sermon.
  1. Should extraordinary Eucharistic ministers place the unused Eucharistic wafers into the tabernacle? It seems to me that only priests or deacons should approach.
No. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are strictly forbidden from entering the Tabernacle and purifying the sacred vessels. And there are NO WAFERS after the Consecration- what appears as wafers of bread is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
  1. Shouldn’t the Celebrants bow to the tabernacle and alter?
In the current GIRM for the Novus Ordo the only reverence that is paid to the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle by a genuflection is at the beginning and end of Mass. This is to be done by a GENUFLECTION.
No one bowed to the tabernacle at anytime during the Mass.
One of the reasons why I dislike the Novus Ordo Mass and try to attend my 100 percent exclusive TLM parish. The current directives for the Novus Ordo state that there are to be only two genuflections to the Sanctissimum in the Tabernacle- at the beginning and at the end of Mass- as to a big difference in the Traditional Rite- any time one passes the Sanctissimum reserved in the Tabernacle they are to genuflect- if a lay person is to pass even the crucifix or the Main Altar of Sacrifice they are also to genuflect even if the Sanctissimum is not reserved on it.

Also, on a side note the priest MUST genuflect TWICE in the Eucharistic Prayer after each consecration in the Novus Ordo.

Thanks for the information. I felt calling the “unused wafers” was not the correct choice of words, thanks for the correction.

In situations like that is it acceptable to contact the priest via email and let him know you were disappointed in their straying from liturgical norms.

I am a recent convert and have a very orthodox parish, my mother is in Oklahoma and everytime I get her to go with me to a different parish they are typically not reverent and less Holy than Methodist services she attends.

It would be nice if the USCCB would tighten up the liturgy in all areas of the country. There are many people searching for traditional services, the center piece of course being Jesus in the Eucharist - although they may not know it yet - and it seems that these “Liturgically Loose” Catholic churches could be driving people away.

v1gilbert,

I don’t know how close your mom is to the west side of OKC, but there is a TLM chapel with one daily and two Sunday Masses in Bethany. See link for more information. The 9 A.M. Mass is a sung Mass.

It is kind of hard to find, so if you decide to go there, send me a P.M. and I will attempt to give you directions.

Thank you so much Snorterluster.

I actually went to High School and College in Bethany. I will be going here the next time I am there and will get to my Mom.

Thanks again.

OU game was incredible too bad about the result.

Well you won’t have any trouble finding it then. The turnoff is just east of the Bethany Football Stadium.

Yea, I guess you could call the OU game incredible–I’m just offering up my suffering for the souls in purgatory. 🙂
