i need help.

the bible as the sole rule of faith? i was told 2 John 9 proved it and couldn’t think of a response.

and about Peter recieving the keys to the kingdom. he wrote **Mt.18:18 shows that Peter was not the only one who received the keys to the kingdom. A correct translation of the verbs in both Mt.16:18 and Mt.18:18 shows that the apostles only had the authority to what had already been bound - they are not the author of salvation, Jesus is:
(Matthew 16:19 NASB)

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”** i know mt 18:18 has to do with excommunication but the other, my bible doesn’t say that. anyone know why this is wrong?

i asked where the guy got his authority which he replied: I don’t have any authority other than the word of God (Titus 2:15)

just need help in responding to these points. i’m fine on the other things he wrote.

There is no handing on of the “keys” in this passage. (The words “keys of the kingdom” do not occur in this passage.)

Rather, Jesus gives the apostles (first bishops) the power to “bind” and “loose” - in the context of judging guilt of an offense, and whether it is serious enough to require excommunication from the Church.

I believe your friend is right. I also have read that the best translation is “shall have been bound/loosed” . And if ever there was an explanation of why one can confidently put their trust in the infallibility of the Pope (Mt 16:18) and the decisions made by bishops regarding excommunication (Mt 18:18), THIS IS IT - Our Lord promises it will be a voicing of what is bound/loosed in heaven by God.

Regardless of which translation one accepts, it is the Pope and the bishops who voice what will be an expression of what God upholds.

"shall be bound" implies that God will uphold decisions made by established hierarchy;
"shall have been bound" implies that hierarchal decisions (in authorized areas) will always be an expression of God’s will and truth - a declaration of His truth and will.

2 John 9:Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. (NASB)
I fail to see how this verse proves Sola Scriptura. Christ taught orally, not in writing. Christ’s teaching as carried by the apostles pre-dates (obviously) the written New Testament. In that teaching was nothing about the written New Testament because it didn’t exist yet. Therefore the NT could hardly be the “sole rule of faith.”

4It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. **As you have heard **from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

7Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.

Those that are “running ahead” are the false teachers, not the church. verse 6, makes it plain that there is oral teachings.

Ask your friend to find a list, canon of the new testament at the time that John wrote his letter.

1 Peter 1:25
but the word of the Lord abides for ever." That word is the good news which was preached to you.

As Catholics we also believe in the authority of the word of God alone.

Unlike your friend here, we Catholics believe that the word of God was not only handed to us in written form.

This passage in 1 Peter shows us that the word of God is also preached, and that it abides forever.

Forever, means forever, not until the New Testament was written, but forever.

Yes as Catholic Christians we believe the word of God has authority.
This authority which teaches us truth comes in three forms.
  • The Bible which is the written inerrant word of God teaches us truth.
  • Sacred tradition which is the Oral word of God and has been handed down from the Apostles teaches us truth.
  • The teaching magisterium of the Church which infallibly interprets the written word of God teaches us truth.
And I would say that 2 John 9 actually proves the the Catholic position of written scripture, oral tradition and the teaching magisterium is correct.

With the Catholic way of viewing authority, we are guarantied that if we stay faithful to the teaching of the Church, we will not go beyond the word of Christ, because the Church speaks with absolute authority of what Christ spoke.
