Sixty-five years old and tonight was the first time I saw a rose-coloured chasuble in use. Father brought it back from India when he came back from visiting his parents. Yayyy!!

Awesome! I also saw one tonight on the Bishop who came to confirm the kids. I can’t recall if I have ever seen one before. Possibly years ago.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the rose-colored vestment was just an option, not a requirement. I’m pretty sure I have seen very few parish priests in them. Perhaps because I grew up in an area where the priests didn’t have a lot of money for vestments.

Edited to add, the pastor of our parish was at the Mass in his usual violet. Due to the crowds I didn’t see what colors the other two parish priests who were present were wearing.

It’s the liturgical color for Laetare Sunday and Gaudete Sunday, used twice a year.
I know, but none of the parishes I’ve ever been in had one. Some priests actually told me they’d never wear one. Our much older pastor back in the early 2000s kicked me out of his office when I told him I thought he’d look cute in it. 😃

Rose vestments are standard in the Sacristies in this part of the land.

I have never been a member of a parish that doesn’t use rose vestments on the proper Sundays during Advent and Lent. In my experience they’re much more common than black vestments, which seem to be the rarest color out of all the options in use throughout the year.

We don’t have black and I doubt we ever will. Around here, white is generally used for funerals.

I’ve never seen a priest in black vestments in my life.
I’m old enough to remember when black was the only colour for funerals. I also vividly remember the presence of the candle-flanked, black-draped catafalque at anniversary and All Souls Day Masses.

@Phemie I’ve only ever seen priests in rose coloured vestments except in photos. As I’m not in my 60s yet perhaps there is chance. It seemed to be getting common here in UK to celebrate funerals in white and for mourners not to wear black. That seems to be changing now. People are kicking back and arguing that saying we should not wear black to a funeral somehow says you’ve no right to grieve. Whilst priests haven’t gone back to black most now seem to wear violet vestments rather than white.

@Tis_Bearself Yes rosacrea is an option not mandatory. I have never seen a priest in them. I would guess many parishes think it’s an unnecessary expense to provide them when they’re optional and can only be used on two days per year.

I think most parishes that have the rose coloured vestments and dalmatics were given them. A couple of years ago we had a visiting priest for one of the “rose Sundays” he was asked to bring vestment and stole with him as my parish has only one of each.

Father took the time to explain why he and deacon were in rose today and what Laetare means.

If the parish or church building is newer then rose and black vestments would be the last to buy or donate. Priority would be given to white, green, violet/purple and red.

Every parish I’ve ever attended or served at has used rose vestments. Chasuble and dalmatic matched.

Usually some weisenheimer stops us after Mass to see if it’s the feast day of Pepto-Bismol. 😀

Always saw them for funerals. . .until 1971 in Philly. Then I moved up to tundraville and all the priests wore white for funerals. I think it’s the same almost everywhere, at some point usually in the 1970s throughout the US many many parishes choose white.
