Francis Cardinal Arinze delivered a beautiful Commencement Address on May 17, 2003 in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown University. The Cardinal’s comments upset Prof. Theresa Sanders and some students who objected to what they called the cardinal’s “anti-gay” remarks. Prof. Sanders protested by leaving the stage where Cardinal Arinze was speaking. He had said:

“In many parts of the world, the family is under siege. It is opposed by an anti-life mentality as is seen in contraception, abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. It is scorned and banalized by pornography, desecrated by fornication and adultery, mocked by homosexuality, sabotaged by irregular unions and cut in two by divorce.”

Today, the Holy Father promoted fearless witness to the truth to the rank of Cardinal Bishop in the Sacred College. I am heartened both by the tribute to Cardinal Arinze, and the significance of the act on the part of the Holy Father.

Blessings,

Gerry Hunter

Cardinal Arinze is great! I saw his EWTN interview a while ago & was so impressed by this charming man who isn’t afraid to speak the truth. I truly believe that the 3rd world, especially Africa, is going to re-convert the world.

I too have great confidence in African Catholicism, and I am one of those “orthodox dissenters” who would have rather seen Cardinal Arinze as Pope. I have nothing against Benedict, wish him the best, and will obey him faithfully, but Arinze…!!! What a man!!!

I agree that Arinze is a great man of God.

I like him, too. It’s not too late for him to be Pope . . .

I have heard that a lot of Africans are disenchanted with him because he’s “too European.”

All the better! One foot in Africa and one in Europe! And wholly orthodox, a man of great charm, and a friendly pastor. What’s not to like?

I love Cardinal Arinze! I love the way he is so blunt and to the point with a touch of humor. I am very happy that he is now a Cardinal Bishop. He definitely deserves it. 👍
