Francis Cardinal Arinze delivered a beautiful Commencement Address on May 17, 2003 in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown University. The Cardinal’s comments upset Prof. Theresa Sanders and some students who objected to what they called the cardinal’s “anti-gay” remarks. Prof. Sanders protested by leaving the stage where Cardinal Arinze was speaking. He had said:
“In many parts of the world, the family is under siege. It is opposed by an anti-life mentality as is seen in contraception, abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. It is scorned and banalized by pornography, desecrated by fornication and adultery, mocked by homosexuality, sabotaged by irregular unions and cut in two by divorce.”
Today, the Holy Father promoted fearless witness to the truth to the rank of Cardinal Bishop in the Sacred College. I am heartened both by the tribute to Cardinal Arinze, and the significance of the act on the part of the Holy Father.
Blessings,
