The Mennonite church in the former village of Schoensee (now Snigurovka) was built in 1909. During the Soviet era, when Mennonites were forced to leave, the building was used for storage and then fell into disrepair, Ron Rempel and Mennonite World Conference inform.

My ancestors on my father’s side were among those Mennonites who settled in the Ukraine at the invitation of Catherine the Great (after suffering persecution in Prussia and before that in Holland…the Mennonites were an odd lot and didn’t always rub others the right way). Though they left for Canada long before 1909 so there can’t be any direct connection…
