Was there a nineteenth century Pope who said that what Americans call freedom is actually poison?

I tried Google, which yielded some references to such a statement but not which Pope it was. It seems like it might be a good thing to know about for the next time someone tells me to “Make America Great Again.”

I think this is what you are talking about.

I have never heard that a quote about “Freedom being poison” but the 19th Century church was still trying to adapt to “Americanism”.

I think the RCC had a hard time adopting to Freedom of Religion and separation of Church and State. The RCC once had a monopoly on religious thought in the west and from the time of Constantine to the reformation it was basically “My way or the Highway”. And “the Highway” meant repent of your teaching or risk being exiled, arrested, imprisoned, or even killed.

Political changes in Europe are among the reasons the reformation was successful. Among those changes were moves toward a more individualistic society where self determination became the goal of society.

Anyway, I said all that to say that even in the late 19th and early 20th century the RCC was still trying to figure out how to respond to all this “freedom”. The letter from Pope Leo XIII to Cardinal Gibbons was just part of the process. I believe Vatican II was the result of the process that took several hundred years.

And yes, I’ve been reading a lot of history lately.

Thanks lanman.

Not having heard any others, I’m going to go with what you linked. (Google provided me with phrases like “poison they are calling freedom in the U.S” but those just linked back to this website.)

Will say more but not right now; the hour’s too late.

What’s so wrong with “Make America Great Again?” When did hating America became a virtue and loving America a vice? The last administration put ProLifers on the terrorist watch list while during this present administration had the highest ranking official to attend the pro life rally march in Washington DC. with vice president Pence delivering a speech in person.

I still haven’t had a chance to read the link that lanman posted, which clearly includes criticism of “Americanism” … but I’ll be very surprised if it calls for hatred of America.

To be fair, being on a watch list just means it’s noted that you don’t adhere to the status quo. Peace activists, including pacifists, were/are placed on them. Mind you, I’m not pretending that it’s a good thing… It’s actually pretty deplorable is a step closer to a police state…

But it isn’t a pro-life vs. pro-choice thing, or even a liberal vs. conservative thing. It’s an authority vs. liberty thing and the sooner folks from both sides can come together to stand against it the sooner we can actually turn “Make America Great Again” from a campaign slogan to an actual thing.
