A frightening thought on Christian humanism

The heart of Christian humanism, it seems to me, is that the economy must be a person-centered and community-run thing, otherwise, it will be centered on the community and run by people, which causes disaster (like Communism).

But I had a frightening thought while thinking of this. Let us say a politican uses Christian humanism to undermind Christianity by using good terms like charity and almsgiving to further a cause against Christians. For example, he could speak of attacking Christians in vague terms of championing people’s rights - including the right to abortion and to gay marriage - and stopping those who wish to take away these rights. He could also speak of harming Christianity by saying Christians ought to put beside their differences and focus on what is common, and ultimately get rid of those differences - i.e, he wouldn’t be talking about Christian unity but about getting rid of pesky beliefs which would be an obstacle to his political agenda, such as the belief that the means do not justify the ends.

I really hope this dosen’t come to pass. I wouldn’t want a modern version of Arianism.

I guess it depends what you mean by “Christians”.

I drive past a Methodist church with a pride flag on the sign whenever I visit my folks; this particular parish (may not be the right term) advocates gay marriage.

I read an article posted here on CAF about an Episcopal priest stating in some sad rare occurences, abortion is a “blessing”.

Again, it just depends on what you mean when you say “Christians”. The aforementioned certainly self-identify as Christians.

As the previous poster commented, regardless of what side of the issue you fall on, the scenario you described has already happened. Not by a politician or world leader, but by simple evolution of faiths.

Do you really think we are so dumb we can’t see through your thinly veiled question as to whom this attack is about? I think this belongs in the politics 2009 forum and not on a Non-Catholic forum.

That’s a well-advised point, Eucharisted.

Who are you talking about?
