A gift for Mary on her feast day

A dear friend reminded me last night of a custom we had when I was a novice in a Benedictine monastery in which we would offer Jesus a gift for His birthday at Christmas.

My friend asked me what we could give Mary for her feast day. I absolutely loved this question, as it hadn’t occurred to me to make a spiritual offering to Mary for the feast of the Assumption.

Anyone else considering giving Mary a gift for her feast day? If so, what will it be, and how will you give it?

So after a little thought, and this is difficult to put into a single sentence so please be a little patient with me, I have chosen to bring our Blessed Mother the soul of a man I met this summer who is just so lost, and taking as many others with him as he can.

“How will you do that?” my friend asked. Well, it certainly won’t be through evangelization, since he lives in another state, and I don’t even know his last name. Besides, what I really feel called to do is begin a novena of prayer and fasting on the feast of the Assumption for the salvation of his soul. My friend agreed to join me (where two are gathered…) in this offering.

This is especially close to my heart for two reasons. First, this man is trapped in the same world of sin that was my home for many, many years (something like living in a septic tank, though I thought I was just so free and liberated). And second, he told me in no uncertain details the exact nature of the sins he intends to commit and when, and the “when” begins the final day of the novena. If anyone can bring this man to Jesus, it is our Blessed Mother. I am including in the prayer, the souls of the women he intends to use in his plan.

So, anyone else considering giving Mary a gift for her feast day? If so, what will it be, and how will you give it?

Wonderful idea! I don’t know what I’ll do- I’ll have to think about it for a while.

At the very least, a rosary. However, I like the idea of your Novena and I have two people in mind that are a little like your friend.

Are you speaking of the 54 day Novena? (not even sure I have that right)
 
I will continue to pray for the salvation of the souls of my children, for them to know Jesus and love the Faith; to live it out as dedicated Catholics who love the Church. Also for those relatives who have fallen away from the Church. May they return before they pass from this earth.

One of my sons is starting to come around!

I keep praying the rosary and that is a gift of my devotion to Virgin Mary.

Also, on the day of the feast, the mass will be offered up to God in Virgin Mary’s intercession for my girlfriend who chose Virgin Mary as her Patron Saint when she was baptised two years ago.

Asking Virgin Mary to protect my girlfriend is a way, I believe, of giving Virgin Mary a gift - after all, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been taking all her children to Jesus.
 
Love the idea! I intercede to our Blessed Mother so often, I certainly should pay homage with a gift - will begin my own Novena with an extra rosary every day for a special intention. Will pray for your intention as well!😉
 
Great idea, I am on the 26th day of the 54 day Novena for my Children. I will continue to being them Our Lady!

I’m a cradle Catholic with 12 years of excellent Catholic school education, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the 54 day novena. Why 54 days? (instead of 81 or 90 or some other multiple of nine?)

I’m talking about the traditional nine day novena, because that will lead directly up to the day he intends to begin his latest venture into the world of sexual sin.

My conversations with him and others have reminded me of the need to pray constantly. There is just so much need. And if anyone is going to be able to bring this man to Jesus, it’s Mary.

Maybe someone else could help out here. All I know is that you pray 27 days asking for your intention, then 27 days in Thanksgiving.

As I understand it, it’s a pretty powerful Novena.
 
Ummm… 54 IS a multiple of 9, 6 x 9 to be exact … :yup: so it’s like 6 ordinary novenas.
 
I’ve never thought of offering a material gift to our Mother, I don’t know why. I guess my gift to Her and Him is my devotion and prayers.

Sometimes I can get so into it, my throat will lump up and I’ll feel tears swelling in my eyes. It’s a very beautiful experience.🙂
 
Assumption of Mary – one of my favorite Rosary Mystery days.

I imagine things like this. In ancient Rome, after any great battle the victorious Roman general would march back to Rome and lead a great parade. Included in the parade would be the brave soldiers who served with honor. And there would also be all the captives whose sad fate could be slavery or worse.

In heaven, the Assumption of Mary is one of the greatest parades held each year. Many souls from purgatory are set free. And Mary leads a fantastic parade. Those Christians who served with great bravery have places of honor in the parade. And there are many whose hearts have been conquered by Mary’s grace and love – now freed from sin and whose happy fate is to live in heaven forever.

Having said the above, one of my favorite things to imagine while saying the Rosary’s glorious mysteries – at the Assumption of Mary – is this. To imagine that there are great floats in the heavenly parade which would greatly pale any prize-winning float in the California Rose Bowl parade. And that while saying that decade, I give roses (ten red and one white) to an angel to be put into the float for this year’s parade.

I suppose this year’s parade was a very huge success. Now, just like the Rose Bowl parade (or the Macy’s Christmas parade) it is time to begin on next year’s floats.

So please, we need more volunteers. We need more to pray the Rosary and in that decade of the glorious mysteries give the roses to your guardian angel to be placed in one of next year’s floats. It’s for Mary and she really loves these parades.

Since praying the Rosary was what brought me into the Church, I want to give her the gift of praying the Rosary every day.

I think your idea is a wonderful one Gertabelle!😉

I’m actually quite good at my math facts, but thank you for the reminder. My question was why 54 instead of some OTHER multiple of 9.

But Little Mary explained that the purpose was to pray three novenas for the intention (27 days), and then three novenas in thanksgiving (27 days). Three being a reminder of the Trinity, this makes much more sense to me.

If I need any help with my multiplication facts in the future, I’ll be sure to contact you.👍
