Although it is unfortunately now out of print, the Catholic Serendipity Bible (published by, of all people, the Protestant publisher Zondervan) was a New American Bible WITHOUT the annoying and stultifying commentary. What it did have (in common with other Serendipity-type Bibles) were simple and useful introductions and maps to each book of the Bible, study and meditation questions for almost every passage of Scripture along the edges of the margins, a concordance, the liturgical cycle of readings, and lots of topical Bible studies aimed at men, women, singles, mothers, fathers, groups, youths, etc, etc. If you want to get the idea, look here:

I was lucky enough to buy one before they were discontinued. They are really hard to find now (and expensive if you do), but if you run across one in a used book store GRAB IT!
