A good edition of Catholic (study) Bible that contains explanations of meanings of "love" in the Gospel of John 21:15-17 (the Gospel of Sunday 05/05/2

  1. I am a Taiwanese catechumen living in Taiwan, who has signed up and is regularly going to a catechesis course.
  2. The Gospel of Sunday 05/05/2019 is the Gospel of John 21:1-19, in which both Jesus and Peter said “love” three times.
  3. I know in original Greek, Jesus in the first two times said “agape” and in the third time said “phileo”, Peter in all three times said “phileo”.
  4. In the same part of the Chinese Catholic Bible, “agape” and “phileo” are also translated into the same word “愛”. The Chinese Catholic Bible does not contain explanations of meanings of “愛” here.
  5. Could someone please recommend a good edition of Catholic (study) Bible that contains explanations of meanings of “love” here?
 
I’m not sure if I have a good answer for you, but I do have my Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (NT) with me, and it seems to talk a bit about this. It talks about a “friendly love”(phileo) and “Willing Love” (Agape). What might also help you, if you have access to one, is a nice commentary (like the New Interpreters Bible Commentary) as it will go into much more detail normally. I don’t have access to mine currently, so I can’t tell you what it says on this passage.

This wiki page has a good explanation of the 4 Greek words used for love in the NT. The problem is translating from one language to another when there are not good words to use. It is a major difference for the word love that means that “I am prepared to give my life for you so that you may live.” to “It is great to have you as a buddy.”

I have the Ignatius Press Catholic Study Bible for the New Testament that is free for subscribers of FORMED.org. It’s probably not happening in Taiwan, but many parishes in my area have subscription codes for FORMED.org.

Anyway, it’s this book. It does give the translation notes for that particular part you’re concerned about, and I also recommend Ignatius Press Didache Bible which contain commentaries from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I currently use the physical copy of the Didache Bible.

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible New Testament is an excellent study bible with very good study notes. The notes for John 21:15-17 do talk about the different Greek words for “love” used in that passage. It is available from Amazon in both a hardback and a paperback edition.
