I just want to recommend a book that might be interesting or helpful for some people. This book has had a big effect on me since I read it a few years ago and it has really changed the way I think.
The book is called “The Christ Files” and is written by Dr John Dickson, an Australian historian. The author isn’t a Catholic so the book isn’t written from a Catholic viewpoint, and it probably wouldn’t be that useful for a committed or knowledgeable Christian. But I think it’s an excellent book for “beginner Christians” or someone who is “searching for the truth” (much like myself when I first read it).
The book examines the Gospels from a historians perspective. It sets out the historical evidence that supports the Gospel accounts and dispels a lot of commonly-held myths about the Bible. The author draws on the work of serious Bible scholars (he is one himself) but it is short and very easy to read. It’s also very enjoyable to read. There’s also a DVD that goes with the book - this is excellent as well.
For me, this book has been a real “eye-opener”. I’m very glad I came across it! It’s not easy to find in bookshops but some online booksellers have it (I don’t know why but it’s very expensive on Amazon?!). More information on the book and DVD is here:

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an accessible and enjoyable introduction to the historical basis for the Gospels. I’m sure there are similar books written by Catholic scholars but I haven’t seen any.
