Hey Chicago area folks!..
If you’ve always been curious about Byzantine Catholicism but were hesitant to just “show up” at a Byzantine Catholic church on a Sunday morning, here’s an ideal, non-threatening and FUN opportunity to ease your way into an understanding of Eastern Catholicism!!
On Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th, Annunciation Byzantine Catholic parish in Homer Glen, Illinois (just west of Orland Park) will be hosting the second annual Prairie Fest on the parish grounds. Although this festival is designed to celebrate the parish’s much-lauded efforts at restoring their magnificent and highly recognized church grounds to their natural prairie state, this festival also offers an ideal way to satisfy your curiosity about Eastern Catholicism in general! In addition to the standard church festival fare of food and music there will be PLENTY of Byzantine Catholics available to answer your questions about Byzantine Catholic theology and liturgical life. You’ll be able to attend a guided tour of the magnificent church building and, undoubtedly, even meet Fr. Thomas Loya, the parish’s nationally and internationally known pastor (and iconographer of the awesome iconography you’ll see inside!). This is a wonderful way to introduce yourselves to Eastern Catholicism, make new friends (by the way, Byzantines make GREAT friends!
) and give yourself that excuse you’ve been looking for to finally attend an Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy.
The festival will run from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The best part is that festival admission is FREE! Visit the parish’s website for more details and directions…

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT
My band, Harvest Moon, will be entertaining from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. during Saturday’s festivities… stop by and say “hi!” I’ll be the dude with the white goatee on his chin and mandolin in his hands! I’m hoping to meet a LOT of you CAF-ers out there! In fact, maybe we all ought to wear CAF name tags so we’ll know who each other is!
Here’s an idea: Come for the Divine Liturgy on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (yes, it will satisfy your Sunday obligation) and then hang around to enjoy the festival afterwards. Better still, come on Saturday (ahem…my band needs all the support we can get!) and then come BACK again on Sunday! I guarantee you a memorable and enjoyable summer weekend!
Hope to see y’all out there!!
