Except that St Athanasius dealt with a heresy and never disobeyed the pope.

Bingo. A response of non serviam from an Archbishop to the Holy Father is completely unacceptable, regardless of his intentions.

Iā€™m not getting into this argument again, I find it tiresome and frankly boring. I gave my opinion, you give yours šŸ™‚
 
He was a good and humble man. He devoted a large part of his life to missionary work in Africa, with the Holy Ghost Fathers. His father, I believe it was, perished in a Nazi concentration camp for anti-Nazi, pro-Catholic activities.

He was actually in retirement when V2 happened; he gave up his retirement to save the Roman Catholic Church. He did what he did with the ordination of bishops because he felt the Church was in an extraordinary situation, requiring an extraordinary measure.

However, according to Roman Catholic belief, he was in disobedience, since it appears that Catholicism demands obedience above all else (at least in the popular mind). Abp Lefebvre knew what was going on in the Church was wrong, yet the requirement of obedience would have asked him to ignore that and blindly obey.

(Ironically, this whole issue of blind obedience in the RCC is what ultimately led me to the Orthodox Churchā€¦because I just could not accept the idea of BLIND obedience, though I have no problem with faithful obedience based on the canons of the Church and the teachings of Scripture and the Church Fathers.)

Not according to ā€œRoman Catholic belief,ā€ but by Canon Law, which applies to all latin rite Catholics. His disobedience was in ignoring Pope John Paul II when ordered to not proceed with the ordinations.

Also, Jesus Himself suffered and died so miserably in OBEDIENCE to His Fatherā€™s will. St. Faustina records that Christ is most pleased with obedience to the rightful authority. So, the requirement of ā€œobedienceā€ isnā€™t nearly so unreasonable as you would like to make it.
 
The parameters were clearly set by the name of the thread. This was to be a historical and objective look at a manā€™s life. Not a discussion of what everyone thinks about the man and feels about the circumstances surrounding him and his time.
