(I feel blasphemous even writing the title of this thread.)
The other day, I was speaking to this lady who told me about an arguement she had had. A theology teacher said that God was not just God the Father, but should also be thought of as God the Mother. In response, the lady said that she was presenting a homosexual Trinity because of the conception of Jesus was through God the Father. (Also, I think she was really bothered by her feminist language)

Then, when I was talking to someone else about this, they said that some people had horrible fathers, so to expect them to think of God as a loving Father was impossible, and you couldn’t assign God a gender.

I’m really confused! Any thoughts on this issue??

Um… If you cannot assign a Gender to God, they why are they calling God a Female. This is wrong, REALLY, REALLY, wrong. Yes some people had bad relationships with their fathers, but You cannot have a bad realtionship with God, because He will always love you. :yup:

Oh and another thing, Why would we need God the mother then we already have a mother MARY!

God has NO gender, He is beyond gender.

But in English, we do not have a neutral personal pronoun. Calling God “It” just doesn’t cut it. Makes God sounds like a thing and not a being.

In our western society, right or wrong, the man has always been considered more powerful and authoritative than the woman. The father figure is the one who provided the food (hunter man) and shelter for the family, historically speaking (please, no angry emails telling me what a sexist I am 😉 this is historical fact and not a personal opinion. ) The father figure has the image of being strong and protective, while the mother figure is more nurturing and gentle. Right or wrong, those are the images that most westerners have of “mother” and “father”, IN GENERAL. God, of course, is all of those things and more. He is beyond what we can conceive or imagine.

Sure, it is true that sometimes people who come from abusive backgrounds struggle with these labels. Guess what? Some of those abusive parents are mothers, not just fathers!! So whatcha gonna call Him then? Ask your friend how a person whose Mom drank herself into a stupor every night for twenty years will feel when she hears God called “her mother”? Is it not sexist to assume that all abusers were male??

Personally, I get really tired of the “politically correct” agendas. Historically, God is He. Let’s go with that.

This issue was addressed on a recent Web of Faith episode on EWTN. Fr. Trigilio made an excellent point that Jesus was a MAN and is part of the Triune God. Hence, at least one of the persons of the Trinity must be male from this most basic starting point. Also, as you pointed out, God is always referred to as He in the Bible, including the first and third persons of the blessed Trinity.

Last, Jesus Himself gave us the Lord’s Prayer, which starts “Our Father.” If referring to God as He was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for little ol’ me.

In our age where radical Feminism has come to great power, many would rather speak of the goddess. However, I find it much more sound to go with the more traditional God the Father. Even though God technically contains attributes of both genders, since both males and females are in his image, to our souls he is masculine. He impregnates our souls with life from without, not from within.

I’d like to address this part of your post. My physical father is an alcoholic, drug addict, physically abusive, mentally abusive, has violence and hurting people as a hobby, and has done a whole lot of horrible things to my mom and I which I will not get into on this forum. I’ve spent 3 years in Ala-teen, 4 years in Alanon, 3 years counseling, and 1 1/2 years in anger management as I tried to straighten my life out. Now the reason I went into all that was simply to say this: I have no problem with Father God as my true Father. He is the father that I wish I would have had. He is even more than that. He is my Father and I do not want any other. So some people with abusive dads may feel that way about the fathering of God, but this is in my opinion part of the healing process for them. It takes nothing away from Father God. He is a strong and loving father and if someone needs to release their hurt, trust me, He has very big shoulders.

So please do not believe that some people can not see God as father because of their own earthly fathers. Rather you should pray for them.

We should also understand the fatherhood of God in its original context: namely ancient Seminic notions. Fatherhood not only meant biology; it was headship of a covenant family. In the ancient patriarchal structure, the father was head of the household and all its resources, and the father was the one who passed on the inheritance (the double share of which always went to the first-born SON).

We as Christians are heirs to a heavenly inheritance which is one strong reason we understand God as Father, as he revealed himself. Yes he and and does love with a mother’s love (a nourishing, protective love), but his primary means of relating to us is as Father (creator, provider, one who bequeaths).

In the same vein, because we are entitled to the Father’s inheritance, we are all first-born adopted sons of God (yes, even the ladies) again not because of gender but because of the covenant relationship we have with God.

Trying to fit in 21st-century liguistic conventions into an ancient concept really does no one a service.

I realize as I write this that about two months ago I would never have bothered with this thread.
The very idea of God as a man or a woman is rediculous. God offers his loving grace beyond that of both of our biological parents. Meaning that yes, God is our Father, in that he supports us and takes care of us, but he also encompasses the mother’s role of gentle nurtuing and firmness. God, our father, is in fact beyond both of our parents. But I will not be calling God ‘mom’ anytime soon.

The femisist movement has no place in religion. Faith, our love of God and the salvation of Christ should be gender neutral. Let society have its corruption and let it try and destroy who our mothers are to us and who are fathers are to us. If we destroy those roles, then we will truely lose sight of what God’s love is. For who better than our parents can demonstrate unconditional love here on Earth? Granted their love is not perfect, but it is so much better than the love that we are able to give to another person whom is not a part of us. That is why I believe that the Catholic church asks that children be raised Catholic. It is asking that they be raised with the uncontitional love that God has, and for the children to recognize it for what it is.
The feminist movement is a perversion of humanity. I am not speaking of rights to vote, have a job, or get an education. Those are neither here nor there a moral dilemma. Voting will not send one to hell.
But organizations such as NOW with thier radical agendas to make women supirior to men is rediculous. This is where I think God as a woman comes from. The need to make the ultimate being a woman. But God is male as much as mankind. Mankind refers to the entirety of the human race, does it not? Thus God created man in his image. We are dual gender so that we do not become independant. Our survival depends on needing others. In both the physical and the mental sense of the words. God knows our natures and if we were able to concieve without another we would think ourselves equal to God, who could create from nothing.
I do beleive I am on a tangent now, who would think that at 21 I would have so much of this building up?
All in all I ask for everyone to pray during this time, so that we will have answers to such rediculous statements as a homosexual Trinity (The very idea boggles the mind) and God as a woman.

Hello-

I thought I’d post this article, which I think is a good defense on the Church’s teaching of God the Father:

catholic.net/rcc/Periodicals/Faith/Jul-Aug99/God2.html

Also - I know another poster said that an inadequate father figure did not influence how children see God, I disagree. I’ve heard on many occasions how a lot of non-believers and atheists have had bad relationships with the father figure in their lives. Not every one mind you but I believe there may be a correlation…Just my :twocents:

There are a lot of very confused people out there, not to mention those with agendas that they will enforce anytime they encounter someone who will listen. I had a homosexual man tell me, “If you really believe what you do, then you have to see God as being gay”, i.e. since He is everything. Good grief!

People can twist anything to mean what they want it to mean. As someone on another forum topic said, the devil uses these people very effectively since his biggest advantage is not in telling outright lies, but half-truths or distortions of truth. We need to be on guard constantly in this “politically correct”, fake tolerance-happy society.
