To be honest I think it was best that you hung up because it would of continued to be a argument which is a lack of charity.

I also have delt with Jehovah witnesses and I actually have friends who are! Last week in school I was debating with one and I was told my bible is fake bc it dosent contain the word Jehovah, instead it’s god.

He also told me I worship false idols like Jesus ( who they don’t worship) and Mary etc. But it’s just ignorance.

Remind them that “j” is a recent letter, and it doesn’t exist in Hebrew. 😛
history of J
Correct! What I realized about the JW is that if there so “biblical and bible based” then why do they call the bible the bible if that word isent in the bible it’s self?

Jehovah witnesses is just another man made religion just like the mormans( who are corrupt!)

  1. I have NEVER heard of J.W.s doing their witnessing work over the telephone. I am about 99.99 % certain that J.W.s never use telephone calls for their outreach to strangers! Beware! Anyone doing that might be an impostor who is trying to rob your house or commit some other crime!
I have. Heard of JWs witnessing over the telephone, that is.

Except we weren’t total strangers, we started out as pen pals.

I started out as pen pals with a woman out of state who shared an interest in science fiction. Shortly after, we became long-distance “telephone friends” because she had a serious illness which made it easier to talk than write. She called herself a “Bible Christian” but the way she interpreted the Bible seemed to me as if it were her own personal eccentricity being influenced by the imaginative realm of science fiction, so over the years, I would respond with the Catholic view.

Her illness, by the way, was real … I called her up at a hospital after one of her surgeries and could hear medical machinery in the background, the echo of a hospital room, and of course I had been transferred to her room as well as given the room number by the nurse answering the main phone number at the hospital.

I had thought that never receiving a Christmas or birthday card from my friend meant that she was too ill to send one. Meanwhile, I remembered her at Christmas and on her birthday over the years.

Finally she revealed her secret and pushed me to convert. When I replied that I could still accept her as a friend as long as we each respected the other’s beliefs, she dumped me for several years … as I related in my first post here at CAF, wondering what was going on and how to deal with it, at the time I was dumped.

At that point, I was told that a JW who was severely ill or disabled could count telephone calls as “door-to-door” work, as long as they kept written records of the number of hours spent on the phone “witnessing” and sent in reports of these records to their elders.

One day after about two or three years she called me again out of the blue acting friendly, even though I’ve learned that JWs aren’t supposed to be friends with Catholics. Apparently, she likes me and is willing to bend the rules a bit to still talk to me once in a while even though I won’t bend from my Catholic beliefs. She hasn’t been too available this Christmas season … maybe worried that I’d want to get her a Christmas present, which holiday, like birthdays, she doesn’t celebrate due to her beliefs. And now that I know and she knows I know, these sorts of differences are kind of like the elephant in the room.

Anyways, yes, JWs can in fact witness over the phone.

But I’d be very, very careful
for the above-mentioned security reasons.

:blessyou:

Yes, you did well; you were direct and no matter what, anything you say to a JW is stuck in their MEMORY BANKS. You just have to drop one LATENT bombshell & you NEVER know when the HOLY SPIRIT will pull it out & perhaps use your quote to get them thinking.

As per the ex-Catholics now JW or anything else, I wonder if this is the way to get to their core: ask them “HOW COULD YOU LEAVE JESUS IN THE EUCHARIST???” I could almost guarantee that would evoke a response, a double-take wouldn’t it:thumbsup:

Casas, LOVE YOUR 1 liner: it’s PERFECTION:D That’s an example of what I mean, a superb line you drop on them & they start mulling it over & over & over… Problem is, they are VICTIMS of DOUBLE-THINK; most non-christian world groups are.

I hope this is not too far off topic, but in reading these threads about the JW, it caused me to recall an incident that occurred several years ago:

Our family was just sitting down for Christmas Day dinner, when the doorbell rang. My son, then in his late teens, answered the door only to be confronted by two JWs that asked if they could talk to him. My son apologized that he could not talk to them because his family was just sitting down for dinner, but asked when the JWs had a high holy day so that he could come and ring their doorbell on that occasion! 👍

I asked this question of a fallen away Catholic who said the rosary every night with her family. Her answer was that she never believed in the Real Presence in the first place.

She is now a devout JW.

I think these people who leave the true church are not properly taught the truth of the Catholic Church. For me there is ONLY ONE true church and that is the Catholic Church all the rest are wannabes.

Your son is a quick thinker and has supplied me with a good chuckle.😉

I assume that most people who’ve left the Church for Protestantism or JW don’t believe in the Real Presence.

To me Jesus makes it so plain in the bible I can’t understand why they don’t believe. I wonder if for some reason God hardens their heart like he did with the Egyptian ruler in Exodus.

This worked with Pat Madrid asking this question to Isaiah Bennett, a priest who became a Mormon, and then reverted back to Holy Mother Church.

For them to believe in the Eucharist, they must first get it straight about whoJesus Christ is. Everything stems from the Holy Trinity. It’s similiar to the teaching about Our Lady, whose feast day as the Mother of God we celebrated today. To call her Mother of God, you must first believe that Jesus is God. Te believe that Christ is present in the Eucharist, they must first believe He is God and able to be present in the Eucharist to begin with.

Unlike many of our seperated brethren in traditional Protestant denominations who at least believe the Holy Trinity and therefore have part of the deposit of the faith, the JW’s believe in a completely different Gospel and therefore are about as far removed from being called true Christians while still claiming to follow the/their version of the bible…

After reading “Strategies of the Jehovah’s Witnesses”, catholic.com/library/Strategies_of_Jehovah_Witness.asp, you might not be so critical of your reaction.
This was a very interesting link. Thanks for that.
I had only just recently befriended a JW and nearly got to the stage of invited her in. She was lovely and we got on very well. She did seem geniune and one of the hardest days of my life was to tell her ‘no more’.

I use to read the Watch towers books she would give me. I found it interesting, their belief and how they look at the world. When I recently read a lot about the Catholic Church in one, I thought no, that’s it. Why should I keep taking these books if I don’t believe in what they are saying, and quite frankly I thought they were outright rude with the comments about the church.

I told her this as my voice was shaking and I was nearly in tears…not good with confrontation:o. It was hard. She said she respected my belief and as long as I continue in a faith that is bible fact, that is ok. She also did say she would just ‘pop over’ to say hello next time she’s in the neighbourhood…mmmmm she hasn’t yet, but will be due soon I think.

I now know more, thanks to your link ‘sedonaman’. A lot of what was in there, she did say to me, amazing and scary really.

Thank you all for your responses. I seriously hope that I planted a seed in her heart but I kind of doubt that I did because we didn’t really talk about her theology or my theology. All well, maybe the fact that she talked to a Catholic that was friendly to her planted some sort of seed in her heart?

A lady and her husband has knocked on my door several times. I finally let them in and sat them down for 20 minutes. They were a pleasure to talk to. They listened to what I say (they had no idea what Eastern Catholicism is) and I listened to what I say. Not much proselytizing from either side, no presumptions, just a good discussion on theology. Sadly many Catholics I come across aren’t as charitable, especially Roman Catholics who cannot accept the differences between East and West.

Anyway, I can’t wait 'til they come visit again. Hopefully I can spark their interest in Eastern Catholicism and explore it for themselves 😉

Hi:
I feel you were not rude. Just firm in your faith. You tried to share, she refused.
When you knew it was over, you finished the call. I feel you did a good job.

Michael.

In light of the fact that JW religion is a cult, if by chance you should ever receive a similar phone call, I suggest that you considering ending the call by leaving the door open for the JW to contact you at anytime in the future should he/she ever become interested in learning more about the Biblical basis for the Trinity or for the Catholic. And that you will help should they want to leave at some point in the future.

“You have my telephone #. Please put it into your cell phone. You are welcome to call me at anytime in the near or distant future should ever become curious and want to learn more about the Biblical basis for the Trinity and the Catholic. And if you should ever find yourself wanting the leave the Jehovah’s Witnesses or become shunned by your family & friends, I want to let you know that I will be right here for you and will support you in anyway I’m able to during & after that process. My name is ________ and I’m so glad you called tonight/today & that I’ve had this opportunity to meet you. I hope you have a wonderful night/day. I’ll be praying for you! Bye bye”

You did a great job with an unexpected call! Congrats on standing up for the Holy Trinity!!!

a brief and good effort. I likely wouldn’t have much more patience than you did.

You possibly could’ve gone with the tactic, “The Bible is a Catholic book, the New Testament was written, compiled, and discerned by Catholics, I think it’s amusing that you think a Catholic book doesn’t support Catholic beliefs.”
Hokie: Great point!

I like the questions Steve Ray has on his website jerusalemjones.com or
catholic-convert.com

“Questions for Bible Christians”

I handed these ? to my JW co-worker. The next time I asked her to respond & no surprise: she had NO ANSWERS, was silent, stony faced. The next step either confront these issues head on or turn away knowing you left important info out of your spiritual equation which is unsettling; that kind of stuff nags at people. The Holy Spirit in his wisdom uses that when He wills.

Sect members are victims of double-think, “COGNITIVE DISSONANCE”; they all have it - they have to in order to support a man-made system & negate Christ’s historic Church. (See recent post on Are LDS a cult) :juggle:
